In Vietnam, the war is called Chiến Tranh Chống Mỹ Cứu Nước, literally War Against the Americans to Save the Nation, sometimes abbreviated to the "American war".

The 1946-1954 conflict between France and the Viet Minh is the First Indochina War.

The 1959-1975 military conflict in which communist forces of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the indigenous National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam, fought the anti-communist forces of the Republic of Vietnam and its allies — most notably the United States (U.S.) is called the Second Indochina War.

The War in Bosnia and Herzegovina was an armed conflict that took place between March 1992 and November 1995. The war involved several ethnically defined factions within Bosnia and Herzegovina: Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats as well as a smaller faction in Western Bosnia led by Fikret Abdić.

Iran-Iraq War (First Gulf War) (1980–1988), also known as the Persian Gulf War. (Before the 1991 war, this was also known simply as the "Gulf War").

The Gulf War (Second Gulf War) (1990–1991) (also called the Persian Gulf War,Operation Granby, Operation Desert Storm, or First Gulf War) .

The Iraq War (2003 to the present), also known as the Second Gulf War (and by the U.S. military as Operation Iraqi Freedom, part of the "War on Terrorism," and the UK military as Operation TELIC), started with the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

The US called it the Vietnam war.

But we were only the most recent country to battle there. France was there for about 30 years before us. And someone else before that.

As a result many of the older Vietnamese speak French and English as well as their native language.

For decades there was war there. After that much time it is just a job.

That is part of the problem in Afghanistan and Iraq. There are so many people there that have done little else but kill for decades they seem to be just defending there "jobs" now. What else do they know???

Vietnam finally got out of that cycle. It is anything but easy. Historically through all of humanity threre has alway been such a place on earth somewhere. Today is it the middle east, Somalia, Sri Lanka etc. People have consumed their entire adult lives killing or preparing to kill and have never developed skills to do anything else.

I am not sure we will ever have an answer to that. By the time enough of those people die, their children are shooting to kill.

Take away all the guns.... well aside from being easy to manufacture.... Some years back some large African tribes got into a war. Neither had guns to speak of. But in a very short time, something like 100,000 people were killed using knives, machetes clubs...

The real problems is how do you get people to not feel like it is OK to hurt someone. If it doesn't matter, the method is pretty meaningless.

So what did the Vietnamese call their War.... I don't know. Over the years it seems too many differnet nationalities were shooting at them to give it a countries name.

Enough rambling for me....

Actually the War in Vietnam was not a WAR, but a military conflict!

The Iraqi war and the Bosnian wars were Also Military Conflicts.

The Act of War must be declared by the President and Ratified by the Congress!

Actually the war in Yugoslavia was a 2000-year old war as it stopped the spread of the Ottoman Empire?

Thanks, RR, Florida!

As the first poster kind of mentions, it was NOT called the "Vietnam War" by the U.S. government (in other words, officially), and still is not. It was labelled a "police action," as a "WAR" would have violated too many agreements. Nevertheless, whatever the official label... it was clearly a war.

In Vietnam the war was called the struggle for national liberation.
In the south, the NLF or National Liberation Front, would have called it the same name.

because the U.S. was afraid of communism back then. Communist North Vietnam was invading democratic South Vietnam, and so the U.S. thought it would be a good idea to help the South Vietnamese defend themselves. Soon, the U.S. was doing the fighting.
