I do not want an amniocentesis; the Dr's tried to give me one today. I do not want to cause my baby any more problems. Instead I had AFP blood work done, results don't come back for another 2weeks so they booked me an Amnio appointment for next week (I am only going to get another ultrasound and then I am going to decline the Amnio) I want to see if the bowel obstruction clears up on its own. And then a follow up appointment in two weeks when my blood work comes back. They are saying that the cpc or brain cyst could be a genetic abnormality like down syndrome or it could be nothing and then the bowel obstruction could be the swallowing of some blood from the amniotic sac or it could be yet another genetic abnormality like downs or cystic fibrosis. One or the other might be nothing but two is cause for concern and I am scared. I have just cancelled my flight home for Christmas as I cant face my in laws, instead I will stay here do research, any Dr's or mothers out there please advise me

Thank you Sammy I asked them when they were pushing me to get the Amnio, "would you be able to cure the baby if you found out what was wrong with the Amnio results"? they said that the could not cure it but I would still have time to terminate if they did it now and if I kept the baby they would know what they were dealing with when I went into labor!!! Well no matter what I am keeping my baby and when I go into labor they will just have to deal with it as it comes! I want to give give my little guy the best chance that I can and sticking a needle in his home is not doing him any favours, they can take his blood when he is born and thats it.

keep refusing the amnio..they tried to do the same thing to me..i have more than usual amniotic fluid and the babie's kidneys were very light on the ultrasound..only i was 24 weeks amnios are done up to 20 weeks...and even then 1 in 300 women get miscarriage...and sometimes the doctors dont do it right bcuz they dont do it enough so it causes more problems....i sufferred miserably for a long time but i am now 38 weeks along and the baby is at a beautiful 7 and a half pounds and perfectly healthy....they were convinced that the baby wouldnt make it or that i would give birth really early....so go with your heart...it could be nothing..ultrasounds arent 100% accurate even if the doctor says it is

Here is a question for you. Can they do anything if you do have the amnio and it comes back that they are right and your baby has a problem? If they can not do anything and you are scared that it would cause your baby other complications, I would not get the Amnio.
I know it's harder said than done, but try not to worry too much. Sometimes these things are nothing. With my first baby, they said she was not growing. Totally wrong! She was 7lbs 14oz at birth and now she is 5 years old. Just fine.
Good luck! I know it is scary!

Iam supprised they are insisting on so many invasive tests so soon. These tend to clear themselves up within a few weeks or so, or alteast decrease in size and threat. Not always, but generally.

I'd insist on waiting for the other ultrasound until the second week when the test results come back, and then you can make the decision THEN to do amnio or not, atleast then you dont have to mash all your tests together.

But thats just me personally. I cannot tell you what to do for yourself, its a very sensitive situation.

Actually, a recent study found that the risk of miscarriage due to amniocentesis is largely overreported:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15755732/

A quote from the article:

"Pregnancy loss was rare in women who underwent amniocentesis and the rate was comparable to that seen in women who did not have the procedure, suggesting that amniocentesis itself really didn't raise the risk of pregnancy loss. In fact, among women older than 35 years old, the loss rate after amniocentesis (1.06 percent) was actually lower than the loss rate for women who did not undergo amniocentesis (1.92 percent), the researchers note."
