Hey Bro I live here...

Fredericksburg Rd where the hotel is not exactly shady or ghetto but there's really nothing there other than your typical sprawl. Bunch of crappy fast food joints and aging shopping strip centers line the street. Try getting something closer to downtown or further out next to Sea World or Fiesta Texas for Spring Break.

I do not know what Budget Suites are like, but the area on Fredericksburg Rd is not too bad. I do know that In Town Suites on Bandera Road are O.K. as I have had friends stay there and the prices are cheaper than Budget Suites. Check Hotel Suites in San Antonio on the internet and a few come up.
If you are traveling by car, the one on Bandera Rd is about 20-30 mins from downtown, about 20 mins from Sea World and 30-40 mins from the Hill Country.
The In Town Suites also have kitchens, free cable and I think, free local calls.
Also check out "mysanantonio.com" there is quite a bit of info there too.
Hope this helps and enjoy San Antonio....

Lived in SA for a number of years. Gotta agree with the other folks -- not a bad area but nothing special about it either. Close to highway interchanges for quick access to anything. Don't know anything about that hotel, but for a deuce a week it sounds pretty good. Local taxes will add another $30 - $40 to that -- no way around that.
