Two questions: 1. Was he put on a blood thinner like plavix or coumadin after his stroke? His levels of these drugs might be too high. 2. Was he a heavy drinker? If he has poor liver function, it could be a GI bleed, caused by liver failure and inability to make blood clotting factors.
In either case, he should be seen by a physician. He may have been having bloody stools for a long time without realizing it and may be severely anemic, and in any case the cause needs to be investigated.

If he has had a stroke what kind of blood thinning medication is he on? It may be that his blood level of the thinner is too high (INR) and that he is bleeding in his bowels or further up the digestive tract. If he has not had a coagulation test recently it might be best to go to the ER with a complete list of meds that he is on. Keep in mind that bleeding out of the rectum is never normal, there is always something wrong.
