No. I heard that about my grandson whom I'm raising but he wanted to stand so he did. He wanted to stand at 3 weeks old! (He was rolling over both ways his first week of life!) There has never been any stopping him. He was actually walking around furniture by 5 months and was climbing at 6 months. There was no keeping him down and there still isn't. He is not bow-legged at all. He is still head-strong though!
He refused to lay back in a carrier as early as 3 weeks. He just sat up! I figured if the good Lord made him athletic then so be it!
My other grandson is bowlegged and he didn't start walking until he was 15 months old. Go figure.

Your baby is doing that bc she is adjusting to not being in the fetal position all day. She is getting used to stretching (if you'll notice, she did that alot the first few weeks) all her bones, now that she can. It's good exercise if you do it ocassionally. Clearly not all the time bc her bones aren't developed enough to hold her weight. The bowlegged thing and all those other weird leg positions aren't determined by them standing up so young. My friends baby had inverted feet (his feet faced in) which naturally happened and he naturally outgrew it. If by age 2 they haven't outgrown such "disformoties" then you would see a specialist. In the meantime, the excersise is good for baby. I would speak to the pediatrician first and see what she recommends.

Prompting your 1.5 months old to stand is not a good idea not because of the danger of making her bowlegged. Don't worry, you didn't mess up here let - this is just an old wife story, which, however, has a purpose of preventing parents from prompting infant to stand too early while their bones and, more important, joints are not yet ready for the job. Your pediatrician can tell you what challenges are appropriate for each development period.

I am the mother of 5 and the grandmother of 14. All of mine would straighten out their legs and stand. I think it might make their legs stronger so that they can stand. I am no expert on this, but I don't have one that is bowed legged from standing(with help) But I can not say for certain that it isn't so. I would think about asking my pediatrician about this. He/She is the one that will know more than anyone else. Good luck and congratulations on your little one.

My baby was strong like that in the beginning too. If she wants to stand up, let her, but take the weight off of her legs. Their little bones are developed like ours are... no tto mention they don't have the core strength to support themselves.
Don't rush her... my baby is 7 months old now and standing up and walking the furniture... I'm still concerned, but can't do much about it.
I don't know for sure if it makes them bow-legged... but my baby's legs do look a little bow-legged.

Babies only do what they are developmentally able to do, WHEN they are developmentally able to do it. If your daughter is straightening her legs and is able to bear weight on them for a little while, as long as YOU aren't making her do it, you aren't causing any problems. My son was "standing" like that at 2 weeks of age, and he is totally 1oo% fine. If she's bowlegged, I doubt very much it would be because of something YOU did. :)

your mother is absolutely WRONG. my american pediatrics book says that there is no harm at all in letting them stand, all baby's appear bowlegged. it's actually very good for their development. he/she will grow out of it in time.

no, don't worry. all babies look bow legged, pidgeon toed, flat footed and knock-kneed. she will outgrow it and look fine. let her stand, she will get stronger that way. all kids look that way for a while, even up til like 12 years old. she will be fine, trust me.
