I am looking for a good first pet so was wondering if anyone recommend a good species I should pick (if there is a choice I have at the pet store)

chameleons do NOT make good first pets- especially dwarf chameleons. many do not like to be handled and require allot pf attention to keep. they cannot be kept in glass because the reflection stresses them out, and they cannot be kept with others. they need a drip system, the perfect amount of humidity and lots of foliage. may i suggest leopard geckos? they are small (7-10'' adults) desert geckos that live in Pakistan and Afghanistan. they are very friendly. here's a rundown of their care:
cage: 20 gallon long or larger per geckos (males should be kept alone)
substrate: no particulate substrates. even if they say there safe, there not. paper towels, newspaper, rep-ti carpet, and ceramic floor tiles are best
Heating: an under tank heater should be placed on one end, with the hot end reaching 90 degrees and the cool end 70. NO HEAT ROCKS THEY WILL BURN YOUR LIZARD
lighting: no UV required, just have something to stimulate day/night about 12 hrs each
decor: there should be 3 hides. they can be anything from store bought caves to boxes. one bust be a Tupperware or likewise container that the gecko can fit into filled with moist peat moss or paper towels. this is required so they can shed their skin and should be placed on the hot side.
feeding: feed calcium dusted crickets or meal worms every day or juvies, or every other day for adults. keep a bowl about the size4e of a Gatorade cap filled with calcium in 24/7
they are really easy to care for, and like handling. just don't grab them by the tail, they may fall of as a defense mechanism
