I have a 6" crack on the bottom left-hand side of my windscreen, just above my Tax disc. Its not in my field of vision and some people have told me it should be ok. Does anyone know for sure?

the crack is not within my wiper area, just outside on the left.

Hi there,
Windscreen damage and will it fail?
Looking from the inside sitting in the drivers seat, draw an imaginary line based on the centre of the steering wheel, from top to bottom, zone A is a band which is 290mm wide based on that centre line, any damage greater than 10mm within that Zone A is a reason for rejection(fail), the remainder of the swept area, damage greater than 40mm is a reason for rejection(fail) Any concentrated areas of damage within the swept area, could be a reason for rejection. ANY DAMAGE OUTSIDE THE SWEPT AREA, Is not a reason for rejection.Hope this helps
Cheers

MOT regarding windscreen related to the swept area covered by the wipers

Area six inches either side of the steering wheel centre line a max damage of 1 cm and all other areas covered by the wipers 4 cm damage max

Thereoretically then outside of wiper sweep not a failure

If it's outside the area swept by the wiper blades it will pass. If it's just inside the swept area, fit a smaller wiper blade.
Get it sorted soon, the crack will only get bigger.

No it will not pass an MOT with a cracked screen within the wipe area of the wipers and if the crack is more than 10mm long , and there is not doubt about it

no that will fail although not in your field of vision they will decide that it could well extend whilst driving and constitute a hazard also the screen is an integral part of the strength of the car so they would fail it on that too

If it will or if it won't it shouldn't be cracked. I would look at getting it replaced. The excess for windscreen replacement isn't that bad is it...?

In the UK, its up to the tester to decide how sever your crack is and if it obscures any vision. If you say its in the left hand corner so its not obscuring vision, it should pass the MOT, but you may get an advisory to get it done in the very near future as the crack could get longer and then obscure vision.

They will bring it to your attention and it might just be enough to cause a non-pass on the test.

you want get that sorted before it goes completely while your driving look at the your insurance and see what your excess is on replacing it, if you cant afford that then they could make it more secure so it wont spread anymore
