First, make sure the dishes are done and the garbage is taken out so there is nothing for them to eat or drink. Next, put builder's sand on top of any potted plants so they have nowhere to breed. Finally, put out a glass of fruit juice or wine, they will seek it out, land in there, and die.

You have food fermented in your house to have knats. Get rid of the garbage and the fruit if there is any that needs to be thrown away.

Four sources: food/garbage, houseplants, drain, holes in screens.
Let's start with the last one. Holes in window screens allow gnats in from outside. Also if you have an evaporative cooler, they can migrate in from the water pan.
plumbing traps can breed critters especially if you have drains that are rarely used, like work sinks or an out of the way bathroom. Pour 1/2 PineSol or similar down each drain, let it sit overnight (you can put the plug in to cut down the smell. Then flush the drain. Chlorox works too, but probably isn't necessary just for gnats.
Houseplant soil can have fungus gnats which feed on the organic matter in the soil. Pour soapy water into the soil, let sit about 15 minutes and then flush it through with clear water.
Finally, food or other misc organic stuff can be breeding areas. Clean everything including furniture and draperies. Keep food covered. You might alway invest in some diatomaceous earth and sprinkle it over your carpets and then vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Boric acid or even borax will work if you can't find diatomaceous earth.

Find whatever brought them into your house and get rid of it. Bad vegtables or fruit more than likely, They can also live in your sinks if you have a stoppage of any type.. (even a small one you don't know about) If you can't find any spoiled food that may be attracting them... put bleach down your sinks and keep the stopper in it. Sometime.. you may have house plants that attract them. If THAT's the case there is a spray you can buy to spray your plants.
