The phrase is somewhat of a misnomer these days. It assumes a certain level of acceptable or minimum level of sensibility that the community agrees on. Next it assumes that the community is able to discern what is sensible. At least that's my understanding of the phrase.
I agree with you in spirit, but would argue conversely that 95% or some other high percent of people that post on the internet indeed have common sense. It is the rare post that has exceptional sense.
P.s. I've just stumbled onYanswers and am enjoying the post and feel like the percentage is lower here. :-)

Um... I think you misjudge a huge portion of the population. There is no effective way to measure the intelligence of all the people that use the internet. Therefore, you cannot safely assume that 95% of the internet using population does not use their common sense. Also, many of the people here are new to computers so give em some slack. God Bless and Merry Christmas.

The world is a small place now with the internet. We get to learn about all kinds of people. It is aggravating to see people who are constant goofballs, and wise-asses. And it is sad to see people who choose not to use common sense. But hey, what can you do - strive to thin those kind out by working harder at a job or in school or both. By the way, I agree with the guy who replied first, 95% is a very steep number.

Wow, yes I certainly agree! I almost asked a similar question last night... Doesn't it seem like they are appealing to their audience (on whatever issue it may be)? Most of the time when it is something philosophical, political, or something of the sorts people lose all sense of identity. They then pick up this autonomous sense of self and answer like they should get a "thumbs up" or maybe even a big star on their computer screen that say's "Way to GO!"...haha

At least 50% seem to think they are comedians. What's wrong with the other 45% I don't know. We are like well kept pets. We don't need to use our brains and muscles for survival anymore so they can soften up and get lazy unless we have the self-will to challenge ourselves.
We have jobs which are often routines and entertainment that is nearly all vicarious, spectator fare.

Why do you think Jerry Springer has been on for so long? Why do so many like to sit in the front row of tag - team wrestling events or go at all for that matter?
Why do marketeers run the types of ads they do, and continue to be so successful? We are a long way off in the evolutionary process for where we should be by now.
Thank God! for random selection.

If you are visiting the teen chat rooms, then of course you will come to that conclusion. However, there are many places on the internet for intelligent discussion, you just have to work harder to find them.
If they were easy to find, then they would be overrun by people who have no common sense.

It's all done by government . I will explain. If they can get you sat in front of a computer or the TV, then you are not actually thinking what they are doing to your country. it's in the government's interest to have a load of illiterate morons in tow

I'm inclined to agree with you. They certainly seem to have little grasp of the English language!
