I would say it depends on the maturity level of the person. If a child is disciplined enough to practice (with the help of the parent guiding them) then they should go ahead and take lessons. Make sure the teacher is good and works well with younger children.

And when it comes to older people learning to play an instrument, it is never too late to start. But keep in mind, the younger you are, the easier it is to learn anything (This has been proved by studies)

Also on a more personal note, I encourage everyone to learn a musical instrument because of the fact that it has been proved that when children know how to play an instrument, they excel in all subjects in school and score higher on placement tests.

there are children as young as 3 years of age!when the child is sure of what instrument or is determined to play that certain instrument go get it and start the lessons! because the child that has a solid foundation early will have a early start towards what ever they go for in the future!

As soon as possible. Teach him/her to pick up the instrument at like 2 years old and keep on encouraging him/her as time goes on. John Mayer has been playing all his life and it's now paying off well. He's a fantastic artist in many ways.

The moment you have an interest in playing a musical instrument you are at the right age.

The only requirements that most teachers have is that you can count and you know the alphabet, so I'd say about 5. Children can learn things like instruments because they can't discern what is "difficult" from what isn't. That is why we learn to read when we're young.

I started playing piano by ear when I was 4.

When I was 10 my mom sent me for lessons to learn to read music etc. I only did the first year 'cause I found it hard.

I say, do it as young as possible 'cause it's easier to learn new things when you're young.
