hallow (plural hallows)

(archaic) a holy person, a saint

It is interesting that JKR has used two rather uncommon words for the title of her last Potter book. I suppose it adds to the mystery and anticipation.

Deathly is rarely heard other than in the expressions "deathly ill" and "deathly pale." Deathly means related to or resembling death. It can also be a synonym for deadly.

Hallows is more difficult. Hallow is usually a verb meaning to make holy. I have read a few opinions suggesting that it may also refer to a holy relic such as the bones of a saint, but I haven't been able to find verification for this outside of the discussion boards that make up the Potterverse.

I have another suggestion; that Hallows refers to Halloween which is also known as All Hallows Eve. Harry was attacked by Voldemort, and Lily and James killed, on Halloween. One Deathly Hallow. If there is another death on Halloween, and JKR has told us there are at least two deaths in book seven, then we have it in plural.

All Hallow's Eve (Halloween) has played a key role in the entire series, since it was the night of Harry's parents' murders, and other important events.
In medieval times, All Hallow's Eve was believed to be the one night where the VEIL between the spirit and mortal worlds grew thin, allowing spirits to enter Earth for a short period of time. Perhaps this relates to the veil from the Department of Mysteries that we saw in Order of the Phoenix. Maybe, this will be how Harry sees Sirius again, or gets important advice for his final battle with Voldemort.
Finally, the Deathly Hallows may speak of a coming Halloween, perhaps this is when the final battle between Harry and Voldemort will take place, resulting in the death of one of them (hopefully Voldemort)

I am very excited! I looked up Hallow in the online Webster dictionary. It means to make holy devoted or venerate. It's opposite is to desecrate.

When I ran the Microsoft Thesaurus is gave me consecrate or make holy.

Sounds like maybe it is referring to deatheaters or dementors. Possibly Jo is referring to the death eaters as a deadly cult.

It could also be referring to the Horcruxes. I think it makes sense that anything that hold a part of a soul (even ol' Voldy's) could be consired sacred. The fact that the Horcruxes could only be made by killing someone could be the reason for the "Deathly." We also know from HBP that destroying a Horcrux can be dangerous (remember Dumbledore's hand).

Also, James and Lily made their home in Godric’s Hollow, which is quite close to hallow. It would be poetic justice if Voldy died where he killed Harry’s parents.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

I guess people that are death will come back and will have a hallow on them.

If you have ever seen a portrait or an image of a saint (Catholics), you have also seen they have like a ring over their heads. That is a hallow.

I hope it was clear enough.

And it has nothing to do with Goldric's Hollow that is with an O = hollow and not hAllow.

just because i see it being typed on here a lot...the place where harry's parents were in hiding when they were killed is Godric's HOLLOW...the title is Harry Potter and the Deathly HALLOW...'hollow' and 'hallow' are two different words with different meanings...
That being said...'hallow' apparently can mean, in old English, gallows...add in that with having to have played hang-man to get the title and I guess ultimately we will have to wait until the 7th book is out:D

Harry's parents lived in godricks HALLOW, and the last book ended soon after he had decided to visit his parents GRAVES.
does that add up? Not quite sure. Maybe he'll encounter some deep dark secret there?

as much as i have thought about harry being a horcrux, i don't think he is, why would voldemort want to kill a piece of himself ? that wouldn't make any sense at all.

iv heard rumors stating that j.k is going to kill 2 characters.. i think that one will be snape. cuz snape has a magical bind with Draco's mother to protect him. voldemort sent Draco to kill dumbledor and if he didn't then it would cost his life. so if draco dies then so does snape. also snape has no choise but to protect draco against anything and anyone meaning voldemort. snape won't stand a chance against him. so either way i think snapes gonna be dead.
I also think that hermione might die. I think she maybe might sacrafise herself for harry or ron( probably ron cuz she obviously likes him LOL), causing the both of them to get seriously mad and kill voldemort instantly,
i noticed that draco didn't want to kill dumbledor, maybe harry and draco team up to kill voldemort together who knows...

i think it does take place in godrics hollow, cuz its a place of death. harry's parents both died there and now there gonna be 2 more deaths probably taking place in godrics hollow. so who ever brought that up has a point.
