I think you mean Kelvin Carpenter who was played by Paul J.Medford certainly he is the first main 'black' character I remember in the show.
He is more recently known for his roles in London West End musicals - appearing as 'Banzai' in The Lion King; as Little Mo in Five Guys Named Moe; as Fitzroy in The Queen And I and as Hud in Hair among others
He earned a Laurence Olivier Award nomination in 1991 for Best Actor in the Musical Five Guys Named Moe and in 1995 he received the Society of Black Arts Achievement Award.
Do you remember the minor musical chart success with fellow 'EastEnder' Letitia Dean (Sharon Watts)? "Something Outa Nothing", which made number 12 in the UK singles chart in November 1986.
Recently he has played the presenter Blake Wordsworth in the children's BBC programme The Story Makers.

I saw him on one of those short term nostalgia programmes recently.I wasn't really listening, he was probably talking about Rubik's cubes or ra-ra skirts or how amusing his slightly different hairdo was.
