This may sound odd but I've never gotten clothes dry cleaned before and I am about to. Should I give the dry cleaners any special instructions? starch level, etc. I guess i'm just scared they will ruin very expensive shirts somehow.

It has been found that heavy starching will actually cause fabric damage. Ask for light starch. Also point out any stains so that the area can be pre-treated prior to laundering. Be sure to check the buttons for loseness and re-attach before taking to the cleaners.

In this case you are not dry cleaning, but laundering. And you are right. Specify starch levels according to need. I ask for light starch. It will keep a dress shirt in neet condition throughout the day. Heavy starch is like wearing a plank.

I always point out specific stains, loose buttons, tears, and tell them why it's dirty. (Like, it's been worn several times in a row, sweating, or smells smoky from a bar, etc...)
