He was one of the most effective assassins during the Vietnam War. He has one of the largest list of confirmed kills during this era.

While in weapons training in the military, our comander had a picture of him on his wall, he also spent about four hours of formal calss time teaching us about him.

Also - as Tigerlily said - John never served in the military and the rumour that he was a sniper in Vietnam is complete nonsense.
He was however, the first American artist to perform in Vietnam after the war - he sang in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in the spring of 1994.

Wow there is a lot about John Denver...I have been a huge John Denver fan for years and even get mail from the friends of John Denver site...Christine Moon is the president and it is in the UK of all places...I live in North Carolina

He was an amazing singer, poet and environmentalist. I had the very great pleasure of seeing him preform live twice when I was a very young teen...both times were awesome...he is very grately missed.
I used the following John Denver song in my wedding. The title of the song is For You:

PS: dmb There is no truth to the rumor that John Denver was an Army sniper in the Vietnam War (a similar false claim has often been made about Mister Rogers). His father was in the Air Force...John was never in the service..
