I don't think the word ironic fits in this situation.
This was actually an Ask Yahoo! question. I'll provide the link; but to sum it up: elephants are startled by sudden movements. However it is unlikely that they would notice a mouse.

Elephants are generally really careful and sensitive. That's why they seen "afraid" of mice, because they don't like stepping on soft things.

It made great imagery for TV and films. A huge elephant scared by a mouse, that's has HOLLYWOOD written all over it. It's unreal.

they are scared of mice and other small things on the ground that move fast because they cannot move fast themselves. i know i am freakin out when a little mouse comes running out, even though i am not afraid of it but it is startling and scares me a minute. good luck and happy holidays=)
