Some of these essays ask you to tell about how you've overcome personal obstacles, hardships, struggles, ect...

Is it ok to get personal? Because it seems like they're asking about your personal life.

I don't want it to sound like a sob story or anything, but for example...my parents are deceased, I spent a semester homeless, and I'm a transsexual who's college decided to out me in the school newspaper. So..I've been through some s**t. Is it ok to talk about these things as a way to describe overcoming adversity and how it's made me a stronger, more open minded person?

Yes, of course get personal. Just don't go into too much detail. I would pick one of these events and elaborate on that and how you overcame it. The essay would seem either too rushed or would be way too long if you discussed all 3.

There are 2 points to scholarship essays. One is to demnstrate good writing skills. The other is to set you apart from everyone else. You can't do that without getting a little personal.

i guss this is what they require, though i'm not sure about transexuality. anyway write what you feel, so that they see your personality, but let someone read whatever you are writing.
