You probably should return the pleco. They have a reputation as being cleaner fish, but frankly, they are poop machines! Most plecos grow to 18-24". The smaller plecos, bristlenose and rubberlip, are still too large, at 5-6", for a 10 gallon tank.

If you want a cleanup / suckerfish crew, how about:
3-4 oto cats: http://badmanstropicalfish.com/profiles/oto_cat.jpg
Supplement their diet with spirulina pellets.

Then you could get a school of tetras. Choose ONE of the following, and get 5-6 of them:
neon tetras http://www.geocities.com/theslidersmarsh/img/neon.jpg
cardinal tetra http://filer.case.edu/~jjw2/cardinal.jpg
lemon tetra http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/characins/images/LemonTetraWFCh_C1124.jpg

glowlight tetra http://www.solodvds.com/images/fish/Hemigrammus_erythrozonus_s.jpg
zebra danio http://www.aquariumfish.net/images_01/zebra_danios_w180.jpg
... the list goes on and on and on.

OR a female OR male betta are good choices for your centrepiece fish.

Don't get a goldfish. They are goldwater (68-72F) fish, but most other commonly found fish including plecos need 78F. Be sure to have a proper filter, too, hang off the back is best (the type with the waterfall)

Feel free to browse through your local pestore and see what you like. Just make sure to RESEARCH everything before you buy it, and don't take advice from petstores too literally - they are often incorrect.

First, what kind of pleco do you have? Most get WAY too big for a 10 gallon.

Don't get a goldfish. Fancy goldfish need at least a 20 gallon tank all alone, and even that is stretching the limits.

If you don't want guppies or tetras how about a dwarf gourami and a couple of platys? Or you could do a betta, or a pair of Ram cichlids, there are lots of possibilities. Just make sure you don't get a fish that will stunt in a tank so small.

- A 10 gallon is far too small to house ANY goldfish permanently. - You can keep some fish in a 10 gallon, but a Cichlid setup will most likely fail. - Most Pleco species easily outgrow a 10 gal (and even a 30 gal for that matter) You could try these: Stocking 1 - 1 dwarf gourami - 6 neon tetras - 12 ghost shrimp - 1 snail Stocking 2 - 1 honey gourami - 6 harlequin rasboras - 6 ghost shrimp - 1 snail Stocking 3 - 8 neons - 6 ghost shrimp - 1 snail Stocking 4 - 1 dwarf gourami - 3 platies- all male or all female unless fry are wanted - 4 pygmy corydoras - 1 snail Stocking 5 - 1 betta - 5 pygmy corys

Goldfish are not as compatible with a pleco.
1. Plecos may attach themselves to slower swimming fish and suck the protective slime off their flesh. That can make the goldfish very unhappy and suceptible to illness as well.
2. Plecos are warm water fish, gold fish are cold water fish. They require very different environments.
3. Goldfish and most Plecos require HUGE tanks. Goldfish require about 10 gallongs per fish because they produce so much waste. What type of pleco do you have? Most pleco's grow up to 12 inches and more. A dwarf pleco which will stay 6 inches long may also grow up to be too big- so I hope you have plans for a bigger tank soon.

You can keep both I guess, many do, but is is not the ideal situation.

My suggestions:
1. Killifish- small, colorful, very pretty.
2. Glofish. They will glow under darklight making for an impressive display. They are very hardy, small and can be kept in a small tank like yours. They are a variety of zebra danio.

You can see killifish at liveaquaria.com, and glofish at glofish.com

Good luck.

A goldfish or two would work out ok until they get bigger. If you have two they will out grow your tank. One goldfish would work great.

You could also get some female betta fish. You could put about four in there. And dont listen to what others say. Females dont fight with each other. Only males do. But dont put a male and female together. You'll want to look up pictures of males and females if you aren't farmiliar with them.

Or you could add one male betta fish. He would have the whole thing to himself and his bottom feeder friend and be SO happy.
Male bettas are beautiful.

If you really cant decide go to the store, look around, pick one you think is really neat and research him. You will probably want to go with a smaller fish. A good rule to go by is one inch of fish per gallon of water.

Oh and your plecostomous might outgrow your tank. Im not kidding. They can grow to a foot long.

good luck and happy fish shopping. Oh and have a merry christmas!

Did you buy your bottom feeder right after you set up your aquarium? If so then that was not a good idea. He'll have nothing to eat. You should buy him some sinking pellets.

if you'd like something colorful try adding 3 or 4 FEMALE bettas. it is a common misconception that betas can't be kept with other fish. bettas do just fine in a community tank as long as there are no other bettas if it's a male. females however can be kept with almost all tropical fish and even other female bettas. I have a tank of 8 female bettas. just do not put two together, you need at least 3.

btw, I didn't mean to just copy the person above me, her post wasn't there until after I posted mine already. she is completely right though.

goldfish will work, I like my gouramis they come in a bunch of different colors and sizes plus they have lived a long time. mollys are easy also, but they breed like crazy!
