Why are gift certificates more appropriate than cash? Most retailers won't refund the balance of a gift certificate. You usually have add additional money to use up the entire amount.

i think a gift certificate is better. seems like you at least put a little thought into the gift. and while you might like to have the cash, and use it on everyday things...that's not what the giver usually wants...they want you to buy yourself something nice.

I think that a gift certificate shows that you put a little effort into the gift. I mean, you can just whip some cash out of your wallet, and it takes five seconds. But if you know someone likes books (or shoes, or chocolate, or video games, or whatever) you have to take the time to go to a store and get the gift certificate. And if they really like what you're getting them, they're going to use the whole thing anyway, probably spending a little of their own cash. They're not going to mind. Most people don't add to the balance, just finish the certificate off.

You should find places that you know the person likes to shop and then it won't matter. Like I got a gift card for Target and didn't use it all so the next time I was there I only had about 2-3 bucks left on the card so when it came time to pay I paid with the gift card and then just paid the balance with my credit card. Kohl's does the same you can always pay two different ways. I just like gift cards because it gives me the allusion that the person at least put enough thought into the gift to try to find somewhere I liked instead of just tossing some cash in a card.

Some places give more value for a gift certificate than cash. If the person loves some particular store or whatever, and the store is selling $20 gift certificates for $18, why not?

I always give cash because it doesn't limit the person on the receiving end to going to a specific place. I think they're considered more appropriate because you actually have to go and get it before the fact where as cash could possibly be a last minute thing.

Cards are better when it is for a younger person! People do not feel comfortable giving a 10 year old $40 bucks to spend where ever. Gift Cards make parents feel a little better about Children carrying around money!
