to add on to what others have said, pi can also be used for spheres (surface area, area, great circle)

This transcendental number is used to make circles just by having the radius. Thus, everything that uses circles depend a lot on the use of pi. Just look around you and you might find many things with a circular or spherical shape. It wouldn't be possible to design them if we didn't know pi. Just a small list of things related to circles that you might find at home: your cds, dish satellite, balls, tires, coins, the shape of the water pipes in our houe, etc.

Pi (3.14159265358979323...) is the ratio of the circle to the square where one side of the square is the circles radius.
pi is the name of the east german spy organization in alfred hitchcocks 1966 filem, torn curtain
the height of an elephant (from foot to shoulder) =2 times pi times the diameter of its foot
and finally,
the first computation a new super computer makes is to calculate as many digits of pi as it can. the maker of the computer then has the computer check its self from the internet.

Pi is a constant that allows you to determine the area as well as the circumference of circles ... provided you know either its diameter or its radius.
