I like a clean desktop, with no more than 3 or 4 icons on it. However, I run a huge number of programs on my computer, many of which I access frequently. So I needed a good alternative, that I could easily launch programs from. while keeping desktop clean.
The answer for me was a little program called "Launchit". For you, i would recommend an old version of it, which is a free trial that never times out, it is launchit 1.5, you may be able to find it online, or email me at pynkgold@aim.com and I will get it to you. There is a recent version of launchit, launchit 2006, which may have a free trial. The plus version is only $15 ... but to be honest, while i needed the additional capbility, i liked v 1.5 better!

You can have Windows do it for you, keeping them neat, or you can freely arrange them anywhere on your desktop.
If you right click on the Desktop, there should be an option called "Arrange icons by".
Pick this and you can see all the options. I have everything unselectede except "Show icons". I can put the icons anywhere I want. I keep My Computer and Recycle bin at the top left. Everything else is just where I feel like putting it.
