1. Dottie's True Blue Cafe in the Tenderloin. You will wait in line in a grungy neighborhood... but it is so amazingly worth it you will do it again and again. Specials that change every weekend include things like lemon ginger blueberry pancakes, eggs with savory sweet potato tart, and the best homemade melt-in-your-mouth coffee cakes in town.
2. Mama's on Washington Square. Old-fashioned mile-high cake pancakes with fresh berries so beautiful and scrumptious they earned a full-page photo in Sunset Magazine.
3. Citizen Cake, near the Opera House and Symphony in Hayes Valley. A little pricier and a bit more nouvelle than the places listed above, but imagine what kind of brunch the best dessert bakers in town can come up with... and you'll be right. They make a dutch apple pancake that is memorable.
4. Ella's, corner of California and Presidio near Laurel Village. Another place you will wait in line, but worth it for the best old-fashioned American country breakfasts to be found in the city. Chicken hash with eggs and buttermilk biscuits... mmm....
