Finding a good Naturopathic Doctor is also helpful if the the person needs a more medical check up. Perhaps they may suggest something other then what I have suggested?
It depends on why you are depressed and what's causing the stress. If work becomes stressful out then maybe it's what's needed is to take time off to relax or take a vacation if you can?
As for depression it depends on how long the depression has been around? Sometimes counselling can help you work things out.
It also depends on how the depression is caused in the person's life because if they have experienced an traumatic experience then most likely they will need to get more counselling to work though that.
Other factors are diet, exercise and rest. A person should take supplements if they require them and if they are lacking in vitamins or have a deficiency. Also St. John's wort is a good natural source for depression.
Vitamin B-6 and 12 are good for stress. A good mult-vitamin that contains those or if a person requires more. Every one is different and thus their needs will be different.
Now if the person has allergic reaction to the vitamins then they should find out what is the base filler in the vitamins. Also that vitamins can be taken in different forms. Capsules, Liquid, Pills, etc.
Same thing with St. John's wort they would then have to find something else that they aren't allergic to using as a more natural treatment. Some people can also be allergic to some herbs.

This may sound strange but depression and stress are self imposed. Thinking is the problem. Some people take drugs to avoid thinking about what they think they should be. Some people drink fluids that make them drunk. Another way to avoid thinking. When the drugs wear off or the alcohol is filtered out we are back to the thinking life. Our reactive brain tells us to be afraid or avoid circumstances that cause pain. We have all these built in mechanism to tell us what to do and how to react. All of this thinking merely serves to keep us worried and afraid of life. There is a way to slow down the thinking and let the brain recover from overworking or over reacting. Mantra meditation will let you be still for a short time and release all the stress from the day or past days. It's like breathing, you have to do it every day for best results. Now the tricky part. Finding a good teacher that help you get to this goal. The ball is in your court now.

Laugh:Adopting a humorous view towards life's situations can take the edge off everyday stressors. Not being too serious or in a constant alert mode helps maintain the equanimity of mind and promote clear thinking.
1)Laughter triggers the release of endorphins—body's natural painkillers
2)Boosts immune function by raising levels of infection-fighting T-cells, disease-fighting proteins called Gamma-interferon and disease-destroying antibodies called B-cells
3)Laughter cleanses the lungs and body tissues of accumulated stale air as it empties more air than it takes in. It is beneficial for patients suffering from emphysema and other respiratory ailments.
4)Reduces stress hormones (studies shows, laughter induces reduction of at least four of neuroendocrine hormones—epinephrine, cortisol, dopac, and growth hormone, associated with stress response
5)Laughter lowers blood pressure and reduces hypertension.
6)It provides good cardiac conditioning especially for those who are unable to perform physical exercise
So LAUGH as much as you can...

Either Reiki or crystal healing.
For crystal healing; you need
Agate, Amethyst, and Obsidian carried in a pocket or medicine bag then placed under the pillow as you sleep.
Crystals work at a subtle level; so give them about two months to work on a noticeable level.

Two things get out and walk everyday for at least one half hour the daylight will help improve your mood even if it's cloudy out. And it will give you Vitamin D if your orginally from a warm climate you could be suffering from Seasonal Effective Disorder.
Another thing you can do is buy some St. John's Wort from a health food store, it take some time to notice a change in your mood a few weeks, but walking in the middle of the day will improve your mood quicker. Try both if you notice no improvement after a month you need to see a professional about depression or SAD Good luck to you.

Korean or Chinese ginseng can help you ride through stressful situations without feeling wiped out or exhausted. And the amino acid L-typrocine acts better on depression for me than St. John's Wort does.

Exercise is number one. Followed by a healthy diet with omega 3 (fish oil), 5-HTP, and lots of vegetables. Finally, cognitive therapy as taught by Dr. David Burns, M.D. in his book: "The Feeling Good Handbook".
