America's santuary cities seem to be some of it's richest--not only in terms of diversity & culture, (NYC, SF, Boston, Miami etc.) but also regional economic powerhouses. Do you believe there is any correlation between these city's social policies & their greatness?

Yup.
Immigrants are the ones that help to drive our nation. We could not have thrived without them.

You may want to look at cause and effect.
I am an immigrant, I've been here just over 11 years. I originally came on an H1B visa and was later sponsored for a green card by an employer that wanted to keep me.
I came to live in the Dallas area because it was a major telecoms center and had the sort of jobs that I could do. I have traveled a lot and like small town America but there are no jobs there for me. It was the economic success of Dallas that attracted me.
Whilst I have no doubt that I, and other like me, have contributed to the success, it was the success that attracted me in the first place.

Now don't get me wrong...I truly believe that immigration is the lifeblood of America and it's greatest asset...we're getting the most ambitious, hardest working, forward thinking and the most intelligent of the rest of the world's population...people with some real 'get up and go' who have the courage to go to a strange culture and, usually, a strange and difficult language to learn.

What I disagree with is your choice of cities...all the cities you mention are have terrible problems with crumbling infrastructure, companies and manufacturers leaving them due to taxes and crime, as well as significant net outflow of skilled workers to the south and the west...latest figures from the census show new england states with net loss figures on population and employers.

Now if you'd cited Dallas, Houston, Jackson, Phoenix, Denver, Boise, Seattle and so forth, I would have agreed 100%.
