real rap's still out there, it's just called 'underground' hip hip now. just like real rock is called 'alternative', although that's gone commercial as well. the main buyers of rap have been white people for a long time now. i don't see anything wrong with trying to appeal to others and trying to make money. but, loosing sight of one's artistic goals is the problem.
this is just some ramblings on the topic

Yes. Dunno. Yes.
Honestly, I'm a white girl from the burbs and I can tell the difference from Old School (good) Rap and this new pseudo-rap that has somehow taken over the country. In my opinion the only good rap/hip-hop acts out there are Outkast, Ludacris (because although he writes the same old dribble as every other rapper, some of his songs, unlike the others, are actually pretty funny when you listen to the lyrics) and probably The Beastie Boys (yes I consider them rap because they pretty much define the genre the way it used to be). I hate to say it but the majority of rappers today are usually only heard of in great detail outside of their small little careers because of the nonsense they get up to. As to the appeal aspect, I don't really think it does. I mean apart from the one or two hits that get spawned from artists' first or second albums, it really is all the same ****. I'm 20 years old and I'd choose the Sugar Hill Gang over Eminem any day.
Cheers.

Rap isnt commercialized yet we there are just so many other genres under it. If we didnt appeal 2 others Rap wouldnt b here no more and we still standing going strong. If you look on any billboard chart at least one hip hop artist is on the top I think we have evolved 2 do bigger and better things. Hip Hop is taking over everything such as fashion.

Rap is derogatory and degrading to women, many lyrics glorify the use of drugs and weapons. These are the sort of songs that are selling right now, and artists will record that which is likely to earn them the most money. I'm not sure what you consider 'real rap'.
