the baby may not be born at all

Later in pregnancy, the drug can cause the placenta to tear away from the uterus (placenta abruption). It can aslo cause preterm labor. The baby will also have problems with withdrawal from the drug. Sometime this is so bad that the baby has seizures and has to be put on a morhpine drip and then weaned down.

The cocaine can also cause dispruption in the way the brain is wired.

The most damaging thing to consider after the birth is the mothers lifestyle and how her being high on some drug is affecting the care of the baby.

Pregnancy + Cocaine = Crack Baby.

Baby will be born an addict. Great way to start life. Think of a screaming baby x 10. Baby "needs" its fix, so its not happy. I'm not saying to give the baby cocaine obviously, but mom needs help NOW. Shes going to damage the baby's systems.

baby could be born with some type of birth defect or learning disability. Sometimes babies will be born fine with no apparent problems but later on as they grow, the child could face some problems such as a learning disorder/add/adhd. Either way drugs of any kind that are not prescribed by a doctor is bad for a baby. Some hospitals do drug tests on the mother when in labor and if the mother has been using illegal drugs while preg. she could have CPS on her back and possibly have her baby taken from her.

"When a pregnant woman uses cocaine during her pregnancy, it crosses the placenta and causes considerable damage to the developing fetus. Although cocaine is thought to damage many organ systems, the developing central nervous system of the fetus is especially sensitive to this powerful stimulant. Such damage has been implicated in a variety of developmental problems for the infant and later for the child."

In medicine, when we're assessing the risk of heart disease or stroke, it's a good rule of thumb to add ten years to the age of an occasional user: that is, the risk for a forty year old user is about the same as the risk for a fifty year old non-user, all other risk factors being equal.
