Does Black clothes dye work?

I recall dying my clothes once in the past and I remember the black coming out when I would wash the clothe's afterwards. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Wash them separately first in cold water to "set" them then wash then separately to see if they're O.K.

Yes, but you need to put white vinegar in the rinse water to set the color permanently. I've used both cold water and hot water dye methods on garments successfully without having them bleed when washed when I've put a cup of vinegar in the rinse water.
