I have to do a fresh install of WinXP and have files I need to save on disk first. Are CD-R files just for music or can I save documents on them too? Help please - thanks!

Yes you can if you have a CD burner. Easiest way to do this is right click the file you wish to burn to cd and then choose send to.... on the send to menu find your D: or E: Drive depending on which one your burner is and send those files there. You'll see a ballon pop up that says you have files waiting click this balloon to see the files. Once you have all your files there go to that drive and click on burn to CD and you'll have them burned.
You mentioned needing to reformat or do a fresh install of WinXP ... Make sure you have your operating system disc before you start this process. Also make sure you have ALL of your drivers for making your sound Cd player and the like all work once you have windows back up and running. The Drivers are as vital as the operating system disc.
Here's a good link and screen shots of how to do a fresh install plus a toll free # if you run into problems of any kind

You can save any file on a CD-R as long as the file doesn't exceed the capacity of the CD-R. So, yes, documents are fine.

Of course you can.
With a CD-R you can save (i.e. write) any file or files of size less than the size of CD-R (700 MB in case of standard CD-R)
If you once write a file on a CD-R, this file cannot be erased or the CD-R be re-used for subsequent writing .
But subsequent writing can be done by choosing Multisession option while making a Data CD (writing files of any format like documents, programs etc.) using any CD burning software like Nero, WinonCD etc.

you can save many kinds of files on the disk. I did that with my pictures, videos, and documents. you probably have to have some kind of program that came with the drive. but when you place the disk in it should ask you what you want to do with the blank disk. look for one that relates to creating a data disk

You can use th CD-R for recording(burning) any kind of content, not only music files.
I would suggest you to use some software like Neuro burn, which has build in wizard to guide u.

This is a painless way.

Yes, CD-Rs can accept anything - as long as they are files.
