You are going to bet a lot of opinions on this one, but I'll give you mine. I see all kinds of inkjet printers, but the only kind I have at home are HP's. Other than that, buy what you need. They make printers for churning out black and white text, and printer for printing glossy 8/10's.

Its going to vary based upon your needs. I have worked for Canon and HP as a sales rep for several years.

If you are wanting:

Cost: With HPs new photo packs they are hard to beat, Canon comes in 2nd, but I would say that you nee to buy the ink/paper when they are on sale to bring the costs down alot. Do not use off brand paper/ink, the paper from each manufacturer is made for their own type of ink formula, Canon and Epson papers are interchangable since they both use similar types of inks.

Photos: Epson or Canon, either will be great. The colors are usually great. Either the Epson R260 or the Canon IP6700D.

Multifunction: HP is know more for their multifunctions, but I would only buy an HP multifunction if it was a higher end model, the cheaper ones are not very good at all. The HP 7210, 7310, and 7410, they are older models but they are great. I would stay away from the Epson multifunctions if you want fax capibilites.

Everyday docs: There are certain types of Canon printers that I would pick for this, the IP4300, uses 5 ink tanks, one of the two blacks is pigment and is very large as well as cheap, it also has dual paper trays and duplex printing. Epson makes some great innexpensive printers for this use, just make sure that you pick the Epson with the Pigment based inks.

Other:
The differences: HP uses a water based ink and if you get moisture on the photos or set them in a high humidity place they become worthless. Canon and Epson use Alcohol based inks and they work great even in humid environments. HP and Canon use a heated process to get the ink on the paper, and Epson uses a cool process know as micropeizo (spelling?), because of this the downside to the Epson is that the printhead can clog up easily.

Epson has a cool feature that allows you to Print directly on a printable CD or DVD, it doesn't seem like much of a feature but I use it alot. Actually I own a Canon IP4200 and I modified it to print on CDs, you can buy the CD printing tray on ebay that is made for the Canon printers in Europe. In the US canon printers do not come with this ability but you can modify them to (http://pixma-faq.periastron.com/).

Brother is the worst brand to go with, the inks dry up really quickly, they just give away their printers.

Lexmark is second worst, poor photo and text quality.

Bottom line: If you want a good well rounded printer without multifunction capabilites go with the Canon IP4300, or the older IP4200. Honestly though, I would say that if you bought an HP, Canon, or Epson printer, you would be satisfied with any of them.

all are about the same and are basically throw away if you get the best deal. My 69 dollar lexmark is super - but the ink cartridges are the most expensive in the store. If I buy the 300 dollar lexmark, it may not be as good - but I can get ink cartridges for 14 dollars. Same with every brand. More people seem to like Hewlett Packard the best, But discount price ones are all the same and I have used Brother, Hewlett Packard, and lexmark interchangably with the same results. Cheap printer lots of money for cartirdges and expensive printer = cheap cartridges.
