Automakers don't admit to ever purposefully making a car for just one gender, but over time certain types of rides have earned the sobriquet ''chick car." They tend to be petite -- even tiny -- sports cars, with appealing lines and a peppy but not overpowering ride.

Over generalized answer -- of course there will be exceptions but overall:
Most guys are not interested in a slow car, no matter how good it looks or how many features it has.
Most girls don't seem to care how fast it will go and put more value on the looks/comfort/features.
Notice it's the guys that use the term Chic Car, I've never heard a girl say it.

Of course there's such a thing. Some cars either appear more feminine, or appeal more to women, or you just see them being driven by women far more often than by men. The new beetle is a good example, especially the convertible, and the Golf convertible. One that surprised me is the Jaguar X Type. I see 5 or 6 women driving those, for each male driver.
The Mitsubishi Eclipse is a good example as well. I have heard that called a 'stripper car' more than once.

Marketing is a wonderful tool.
VW Bug, Mini Cooper, Harley Sportster... (OK the sportster thing was a low blow)
It would be foolish of the auto manufactures to not market autos for women... Besides, they do count for about 50% of the cars sold each year!

The term "chick car" refers to small 4 cylinder economy cars. Its a male macho thing, e.g. Large V-8 that really honk are only for guys.
Try telling that to my friend (female) who rides a Kawasaki ZX-14,she blows the doors right off all the guys. Hope this helps!
