A quick amswer is to say that is is natural for humans to simply make up thiings to explain things they dont know about. Second we tend to generalize based on an isolated experience. Visitors take stupid thoughts and ideas to their geographic location then a grapevine of bad information starts. After years pass we begin to take silly ideas and turn them into false fact.

I'm from the backwoods of West Virginia, and I wonder why a lot of people don't know that West Virginia & Virginia are two different states. As for being barefooted...well it is warmer in the south...but when it gets cold the shoes come out, and for being educated...well there's no book out there that can teach a man how to hunt and survive when it actually comes to living in the mountians. As for being toothless...well well well....I have a better set of teeth then you do probably, cause I wear dentures, but then again I am 49...lol. Now take it from my perspective about going barefooted. All the portraits you seen of the people barefooted was out in the country...right? I sure wouldn't go barefooted in the city people stepping on my feet, and plus, in a more populated area the Jones try to out do the other generally speaking..face it...even the homeless has shoes....lol. Going barefooted is a sign of comfort and living in peace if you think about it. As for being toothless...well what can I say...living in an isolated area...dentists can be a long ways away and if your poor it's better to buy a loaf of bread then to go to a dentist...even the homeless in the city have bad teeth!!! As for me I do have a motorcycle, a car, my own place, ohhh and shoes, however the church I go to does have an outhouse.

It's a thing from back in the early days of our country. All the well to do people were from the north, Maine and New York and such. All the people who left and went south and west were considered poor because they had to spend all their money on farming.

There were no schools and if there were they didn't have time to go to them because they had to work on the farm. They didn't have money for shoes and they didn't have money for a dentist so they just either lost their teeth or pulled out each other's.

Because the north portrays the south in a bad way. The north is actually jealously of the South and its low crime rate, beautiful women, warm weather, and kind nice people. I would like to wish people from the South a Merry Christmas and next year I plan to move down South for good.

I think it starts with people who have little education and little exposure to the world. They accept that what they have seen of one group of people is the way all the people of that group are. This is true of any group of people - not just southerners - people grouped by geographic location, race, religion, sexual preference - all groups have people who portray the group as being the same, not individuals. I believe education is the key to end stereotyping.

It's just what people think of us, cause they dont no any better not to. It's just something that got started years ago and lead many people to believe that it's the truth, but which it is not. Just cause people speak differently or as an actsent does'nt make us any different, come to think of it we all have actsents, whats so kool bout everyone being the same anyways. But we are all the same.

I never could figure that out myself. And to be honest the most toothless people I've ever seen are in certain parts of Connecticut.
