We're really not religious people, for the past 20 years I've believed Christmas is about family. Look at the poor people stranded in Denver & London..just trying to get home! I think the soldier put it into perspective when he said (as he's stranded at the airport) "Could be worse, I could still be in Iraq". It really started getting crazy about ten years ago, when we started seeing christmas decorations next to Halloween stuff, right? My BF, daughter & I celebrate around Jan 6th, AFTER all the crazies have passed us by. Way more relaxing & everythings on sale! I'm very sorry you took down your tree already & opened your gifts. Maybe next year make a point of ignoring all the commercialism around you & do your own thing!!! Maybe if it's snowed where you are you can pack up with a thermos of hot chocolate & cookies & go look at decorations. SOME NEIGHBORHOODS REALLY ARE BEAUTIFUL not just competing!! Merry Christmas!!

I know what you mean, but I think that everyone assumed it this way because they all wanted to celebrate christmas together. There is no holiday spirit left and I am very dissapointed. I will still follow tradition and open the gifts on Monday, but man, how do people become so greedy? I don't think we will ever find out until we get to heaven :) I hope that you still enjoy December 25 and and that a little bit of scroogeness doesn't rub off on us. I actually just finished reading that book. Anyway, as Dickens puts it, "and Scrooge participated in all of the Christmas cheer and enjoyed it throughout the years!" Merry Christmas to you all and remember Jesus, the Savior who made it possible to live after death

Jesus was a Pisces. His birthday is in the spring. All you are celebrating on Dec. 25 is greed, commercialism, cutting down trees, killing animals and they most environmentally damaging holiday of the year.
If you really believe this is a sacred day you should do the gift exchange on another day. My uncle is a priest and his family always does gift exchange on new years so they can focus on the true meaning of Christmas.
All in all, Jesus has been dead for two thousand years and people are still celebrating his birth? I think its time to let ol' JC rest and move on...

I was thinking about the same thing. ... It doesn't feel much like Christmas to me either this year. I looked in the paper and noticed a few very selfish letters to Santa from some of the kids... asking for more presents than they would probably even have room for in their homes. And my grandmother is in the hospital and not doing well... that is causing stress on all of our family. ... Hopefully the holiday spirit will hit us all tomorrow and be much stronger next year.

I agree with you that Christmas is supposed to be a day to celebrate the birth of Jesus. I am shocked... I haven't heard anyone mention that in person all year. I have been waiting to see if I can actually make it through a year without anyone saying the true meaning of it, or if someone will speak up and say the right thing. I know I could speak up, and I probably should. But still... I am waiting out of curiousity to see if anyone else does.

I did tell my four year old daughter what Christmas is all about. I make sure that she knows every year that it is about Jesus and we are celebrating how happy we are that God was kind enough to share him with us.

I was so proud of her a few weeks ago... I almost cried. Since my grandmother is in the hospital, she has been staying with our neighbor and the neighbor's grandkids while I am at work. We were in the toy isle getting a few small gifts for the kids, and she stopped at the baby section. She told me that we had to get a special gift for Baby Jesus. When I told her that we couldn't take a gift to baby Jesus, she told me Santa could because he visits all of the kids. .... I am proud to say that my little girl seems to know what Christmas is really about. I hope that she and others will always remember.

------

By the way, incase anyone wonders how I solved the toy incident... I was tempted to go ahead and get a baby gift then share it with charity. But I am on a very limited budget, so I took the time to explain to her that Jesus was here a very long time ago. He has already grown up, died, and gone back to Heaven to be with God. I told her that the best gift we could give him now is to be glad that he was here and to be good to our friends, neighbors, and family.

-----

I will tell you what helped me a little to get more into the holiday spirit yesterday. ... I went to the store and stopped my shopping to help out the other shoppers wherever I could. ... Just little things like getting on the floor to find the last few of an item hiding at the back of the bottom shelf and reaching stuff at the top or helping find items. ... Seeing the smiles on their faces as they told me Merry Christmas put me back into the right mood until I got home and got some bad news. ... I think I'll go back out today to get some tape and milk.

---------

One more thing, on the subject of my kid. ... What's up with people wanting to shower her in presents? It's sweet and everything, but I just asked Santa to get her 4 small gifts (bubble bath and the doll, train, and puppy she asked for) and I got her 2 things. I was hoping everyone else would just get her 1 thing to let her know they remembered, but no one is respecting my wishes. ... hmmm.. I think I will post a question on that subject!~

Merry Christmas. It's good to see that you are remembering the right thing. Maybe if you could help others remember it will bring back the holiday spirit.

Well I hate to say it, but its about commericialism. While much of the world has rushed on in this "Instant gratification" generation, we have lost much of the "Holiday Spirit" as you say. Your right though...Christmas for many people has become just another day on the map, and another hassle that has to be taken care of. Christmas was never meant to be a hassle, but to be a time of rememberance.
For example, much of the holiday season decorations remind us about Christ. These decoration have been passed down for generations. Many of our holiday decorations have come down from Europe by our ancestoral immigrants and from the early church fathers.
Let me help maybe bring your "holiday spirit" back. An early monk named Boniface was the first person to bring about the Christmas tree. He began to use it as an example to the pagans to help show people the trinity of God. Just as a Pine tree when looked at from one direction it has three corners but yet is still one tree. God has three persons as well but is yet one. Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The lights were added later by Martin Luther when he wanted to teach his children that Christ was the light of the world.
The ornaments were added originally for the Feast of Adam and Eve, and were in the shapes of bread and the forbidden fruit percieved as apples.
Presents are given under the tree, just as the wisemen brought Jesus presents as a babe.
The wreath was chosen in the shape of a circle because God is unending with no end.
Bows of red decorate the halls signifying the blood of Jesus Christ as he died upon the cross.
Holly and Mistletoe - the holly which is green signifying life, and the mistletoe signifying the blood of Jesus.
And there is SO MUCH MORE! Many websites online are dedicated and devoted to teaching the true meaning behind Christmas. Just check some of the out!
Wishing you and yours the best of the Christmas Season!
OH! Another great way to get the holiday spirit back, is to go to a Christmas Eve Candle Light Service. Many churches have them. There are carols, and candles and just a beautiful time to remember the birth of Christ. If you really want to do something fun, go see the movie THE NATIVITY in your theater right now. Its AWESOME!
Check out what the true meaning of the candy cane is and others. Its really fun to investigate and learn! Merry Christmas!

when you consider which you're needless to say refering to Christmas, why do no longer you basically say Christmas? i do no longer do the secular "holiday" with the materialism and the overspending and the greed and the identifying to purchase of provides which would be forgotton in a month. Yippee. the place's the exciting in that? i'm courteous. that's whilst the clerks are impolite and/or indifferent or actually have a saccharine i'm-being-great-because of the fact-that's-my-activity "great". that's offensive adequate for me to no longer save on the save back. (My husband walked out of a organisation the different day because of the fact the guy replaced into smoking at the back of the counter. no longer basically does he fee respiration, however the guy replaced into breaking the regulation.)

Don't let a momentary down spot spoil the entire holidays..
Many people have spots of depression during holidays like
Christmas because there are so many memories & emotions
tied to them...Many emotions come to the surface and you are
unable to filter them....Don't over-react when a sad one appears...

Finally, someone else who feels this way. The reason for the over-commercialization (is that a word?) of Christmas is greed. People don't care about the true meaning of Christmas anymore. All they care about it money, money, money.
