Sadly tragedy doesn't take holidays off. Has anyone had to totally skip an Xmas because of tragedy? A few years ago I had a very bad holiday. The day before Xmas our beloved dog "Champ" was hit by a car. He appeared OK at first, but as the day went by he got worse and passed away Xmas day. We tried to get a vet but try to find one on Xmas day. Needless to say, we didn't do any celebrating as we were too busy trying to save Champ. Talking about it brings back really bad memories (sorry), but I wonder if anyone else had any "somber" holidays???? Talking ALWAYS helps you deal with things

My mother went into a coma the week of Christmas. I was 16, she was 41. That whole week was horrible as we took turns visiting her in the hospital as she lay with tubes attached and incoherent to who was around her. They said she was brain dead already, but I guess my stepfather wanted to keep her on life support.

New Years Morning they disconnected her life support at 7am.

That was many many years ago. However, there is not a Christmas that I don't think about it. Now as a new mom myself, I can't even imagine my own child going through this. It was hard, but you just make it through.

Yes, talking does help deal with things. Writing too.

It sounds like you are missing your dog,and not enjoying the holiday because of his/her passing on the holiday a few yrs ago.
This is understandable.Sadly LIFE doesn't take a holiday just because we do,and in life both the good & bad happen.
Why don't you think about all the great memories you've had with "Champ"? I'm sure there are many.Perhaps buying another dog,or making some new friends would help you get over your grief.I'm not saying to forget about "Champ",quite the contrary;I'm saying remember the fond memories and move on in life never forgetting those good times with your dog.
Life is dynamic: remember the past,...... live the present,...... and dream about the future.
BEST TO YOU !

I am so sorry for your continual loss. I've never personally experienced a tragedy on a holiday but I have lost a dog and I might as well have lost a sibling.

That was 20 years ago and I still miss her.

Last Christmas (the morning of) my Grandfather passed away. It was a very sad time, but it also meant that the WHOLE family was together for the first time in many many years. My family left our Christmas at home under the tree ... we had it when we came back, but it wasn't the same. It's been a hard year ... but Christmas is more special now because of it. I know it was supposed to mean something before ... but now it really does.

No not really. My mother passed away over 3 years ago but it was expected and I had spent time with her beforehand with a few visits even though I live quite far away. I didn't really feel bad as I did take the time to see her and make sure my daughter knew her. I miss her for sure.

Well, needless to say, this is my first christmas without my grandma. She died on this August, and we miss her very much. But I have not ended the celebrations because of this. Life must go on, as we all have to die some day.
