The car is November 2002, just bought, and everything else seems perfect, including acceleration. It's my first diesel and I expected more noise and fuss when cold, but this continues at tickover even when warm. Help much appreciated.

I would expect 800 to be normal but I wouldn't worry as long as it runs ok.

Tick over is fine at 900. There is nothing wrong with your car. New common rail direct injection engines are a far cry from the early diesels that clattered like a tractor. I know that with the audi 2.5, the 5 cylinder sounds like it is idling too high but trust me, its fine.

Hi there, welcome to the world of high pressure diesel, Todays diesels are environmently friendly and succeed very well at it. Gone are the days of diesel knock at idle when cold and the poor acceleration. These diesel engines are controlled electronically and clean fuel and proper servicing at the correct intervals are important. Depending on what service intervals have been set at the dealers, then servicing should be carried out at either 10k or 12month intervals or long life intervals where the car will let you know when to service it by illuminationg at service reminder.
Cheers
