Kamikazes used helmets to protect themselves in the crash in case of the nearly zero probability survival rate that they had since their planes where filled with explosives so the crash would be more damaging. Plus, it was a normal safety procedure to wear helmets during flight in case of other than intention damage.

The helmet was part of their uniform and with the high value that hte Japanese military placed on honor, being out of uniform would have been unthinkable. Being a Kamikazi was a grat honor and was the epitome of service and duty. Therefore, being in full uniform was an absolute necessity it was apoint of honor adn pride to obey even the smallest of orders.

The headphones of their radio were built into their leather helmet. Without their helmets, they could not get directions as to which whey they should go to find their targets.

The helmet included goggles I think and the cockpit was partially open to the elements. Obviously they needed to see where they were going!

When flying the plane towards their target, they would often come under intense anti aircraft and small arms fire. If a bullet or shrapnel was to hit them anywhere else they could likely stay alive long enough to guide the aircraft into the target, but a hit to the head would instantly kill them, blind them or knock them unconscious, thereby disabling the pilot - who is in effect acting as a guidance system for a missile.

In case they had to bail before actually hitting what they were trying to hit. So they would have a better chance to come back and try again.....
