Sure it depends on what u know about them and ur budget. But I've got a bunch of rules when buying a present for someone. Let's start with the DON'Ts:

1. NEVER GIVE MONEY OR ANYTHING OF THE KIND !!! It says absolutely nothing about ur relationship to them. Kids will grow up materialistic. If u want to give someone money because u think they're in great need of it or something, u can do so at any time of the year. I really respect that, and I think it's great, if you have enough money to support yourself first. But don't use their birthday as an excuse for this.

2. DO NOT BUY SOMETHING THAT THE PERSON NEEDS ! For example, if that someone needs a new hair dryer, don't just go and buy one for them for their birthday. It's almost the same as handing them the money, except u take away all the "hard job" of them buying what they NEED (not WANT). And it also doesn't say anything about your relationship.

3. TRY NOT TO GET INTO CLOTHING & STYLE ! Unless u know that person VERY VERY VERY well or have about the same style of clothing as they do, try not to buy any clothes for them. It's almost like playing the lottery. They may like the new thing, or they may not. If they don't, then you'll end up just losing ur money cause they'll never wear it, OR remember it was from you (If they like it, they'll remember you, because liking the thing makes an association to you in their mind).

4. DON'T BUY VERY EXPENSIVE STUFF EITHER ! Like a big diamond ring, or some hi-tech piece of hardware. They'll think you're trying to impress them, or that you want something from them. Trying to impress someone is bad, cause it instantly tells them that u consider yourself of lower value than themselves.

5. DON'T BE CONCERNED WITH WHAT THEY LIKE OR WANT. Same thing, u're still trying to impress them. A present is not about giving someone what they want, it's about giving them a part of YOU, and a chance to connect to YOU anytime they see the thing. First of all, YOU have to like the gift, and then think if the other person could enjoy it or not. And remember, the enjoyment is all about that thing making the connection to you in that person's mind.

And now, some of the DOs:

1. BUY SOMETHING CHEAP & FUN. Fun is always great for anyone, and it's not very expensive either. Something like a cool toy or a little device that does something interesting is great for teenagers. Adults generally like different types of toys, but the thing is they still like something to play with. They just have to be a little more sophisticated. For example, I once bought my dad a very advanced corkscrew which looked very hi-tech (it was only about $10) and he loved it!

2. MAKE IT UNIQUE ! Try to buy something that is very rare, and still very very cool. The person u give it to will feel great if someone comes to their house and makes a comment like "WOW! What a cool ... !" or "How cool is that!" Instead, if it's something everyone else has, it will pass almost unseen. Remember: people tend to dismiss things that are common, and remark things that are new.

3. IF YOU GIVE FLOWERS TO SOMEONE, LOOK FOR THE SYMBOLS ! There are a lot of articles about the symbolism of the flowers and their colours. Just go to Google and type in "flower symbolism", and read a few of them to get an idea. Also, do not just buy flowers for someone, because they'll only last for a week or maybe two, if you're lucky. And not to boys. They don't know to appreciate them. But one great flower can make all the difference to a girl if u choose it with care.

4. TRY HAND-MADE GIFTS ! As I said, try to give something unique to someone as a gift. What can be more unique than something u've made yourself? Try using art, as it expresses the your personality the best. Write notes by hand, build stuff, create sculptures (even if u get nothing understandable), Pack the gift yourself, and pay attention to all of the details - keep in mind even the steps that the other person is gonna follow to unwrap the gift, and you can stick a note inside somewhere, or a clue, or something.

5. YOU CAN WORK ON THE PRESENTATION. So, u bought the gift, some flowers, and now you want to find a way to give it to the other person in a very creative way. In the movie "Serendipity", the girl, Sara, gets a gift from her boyfriend... It is in a very large box, which has a smaller box inside, and so on. After all the unpacking, she finally finds "the thing", which is a small ring case, but without the ring. Then her man comes and gives her the ring. Now I'm not saying you should give someone a ring. But isn't that an interesting way to give someone a present! This one's optional, if u think you're good at it, OK, but if not, it's probably better to stick to the old "handing it" type of presentation.

And, about kids... If you want them to actually learn to enjoy life and value the real good things in life... give them a gift that respects these rules.
If u want them to become the next "rats running the rat race", then sure, buy them stock in a company... That's OK too, considering there is a big need for those people in the world, too.

I'm glad if I've been of any help.

Money...you can never go wrong. That's what I gave my 21 year old daughter and 24 year old son. Then they can but whatever they want. Or a gift card to their favorite store. Happy Holidays!

It truely depends on the girl and what your relationship is to her. Gift Cards and Cash are always great! As for the guy, I would def. go cash or gift cards! to many diffrent types of guys for rap to country to goth, best to let them decide.

Stock in a company !!

No time like the present to get them interested in their financial future, and no time like now to help them learn and even teach yourself a few things.

You can even get stock directly from companies. Check out "direct purchase plans" on the web and see if there is a company that interests you. Simply call them and request their prospectus and investor package, ITS FREE !!

Nothing like getting young adults ( I consdier them still kids till age 30 or till they act decent!! ). interested in THEIR OWN future !!
