You only need one per computer. If you have one on the computer, then it will protect everyone that uses that computer. The family use is for puting it on more than one computer. For example, if you had three computers in you house you might want to buy for all of them at the same time to save some money and time.

I've used Avast free antivirus for 3 years and never had a problem. the one virus that got past my router was immediately caught by Avast. So, it isn't true that free antivirus programs are more susceptible to virus. this is one of the best ever, and has been around as long as Norton or McAfee, since 1981, in fact. The antivirus program protects the computer, no matter who uses it. And a free antivirus can be put on any and all computers in the household without buying a license to use it. Norton and McAfee are more trouble than they are worth, and both are big memory and resource hogs.

Virus protection is meant to provide total PC protection. don't fall for the snakeoil salesmen who try to charge you extra for multiple users. Just buy one license for your PC. I would recommend Norton and Symantec Antivirus and Panda antivirus. AVG anti virus is also a FREE option.

Any anti virus protection software will protect the computer, not individual users. I hesitate to use "free" anti-virus software, it is usually the most susceptible to being circumvented.
