I am SO afraid of spiders! I hate to even be asking this question, just thinking about them makes me want to perch up onto the chair I'm sitting on to ensure I'd see one before it crawled onto me. Pictures of spiders (particularly tarantulas) REALLY bother me, I screamed when I saw one in Guinness World Records. I hate the real ones as well, although I haven't seen any big spiders in person before. (Except once at a pet store, where I freaked BIG TIME and ran out of there before my mom could stop me.)
Does anyone know how I can overcome my fear???
Please don't link to anything as I won't click on them (just in case some meanie linked to a page with a big spider on it, or even a nice person linked to something with a little spider that they wouldn't think would bother me). Thank you!!

I agree with Sorcha, it is a good point. My best friend used to be so scared she almost trampled me to get away from them. After being around mine, she overcame her fear so well that she helps me raise them now. I suggest maybe a stuffed animal in the shape of a spider to start with, it is hard to be afraid of a cute and fuzzy toy. As you get more comfortable with it, move closer to the real thing, like a pic and maybe even a molt skin (no real spider inside anymore). You may never be friends with them, but you risk hurting yourself or someone else when you encounter something you fear so much. If I knew of a link to a sketch of a spider I would send it to you, it would be way less scary then the real thing. Best of luck to you.

Kinda like me I HATE spiders. But I've kinda gotten used to it and I'm not as afraid of them now. Um wat I've done is I've been in a room with someone else with a small spider in there and kinda just get used to their prescense. Also you and a couple friends could do this thing called Spider Island where u all have to catch a spider in a cup and then u take a bucket and fill it with water then u take another bucket (the first one should b square the second round) and put it in there and weigh it down with rocks then put sticks in there and watch the spiders on the stick and just almost examine them. Also you could like do research about spiders or just look at pictures of spiders to get used to them. Hope that helps if you want any extra help u can e-mail me at smoketreerider11@yahoo.com!

My sister has the exact same fear. I remember when growing up my dad used to get the green top off tomatoes and throw them at her pretending they were spiders (yes, very mean, he thought it was hillarious though). Your fear is an irrational one. Compare your height to that of a spider. Also spiders are more afraid of you than you are of them (yes its true!). Some have venom because thats the only defence they have. I would suggest that you look at a photo of a spider for a few minutes a day. Take deep breaths and if you feel yourself getting too afraid stop. Try do this every day and eventually you will notice you can look at them for longer periods. =)

I was way afraid of anything that crawled, then I moved to Arizona and had to deal with bugs, that's just part of living there, so now, back in Cali and if I see a bug, I just squish it and get it over with. So to answer your question on how to overcome your fear, you have to just face it. Go get a trantula in a cage and just take care of it, until you're not so scared anymore. I don't think you would have to pick it up, just be around it. Then give the thing away.

I use to be very creeped out by insects. I found I overcame this (and I know you won't like this, but please keep reading) by looking at photos and learning more about them. It's much easier to face a fear when you know something about it. Think about what bothers you about spiders. Are you afraid they will hurt you? Or are you just disgusted by their appearance? Try checking out books on them, and learning which ones you do need to avoid. Most are very afraid of you and won't harm you, and you might learn something fascinating about them. Now I'm not saying you will love them afterwards, but it will help you to be able to tolerate them much better. Good luck!

*chuckle* i thought about sending you a link. i won't be mean. hmmm. this sounds like a big fear to you. i mean, i don't like spiders either. i don't like any bug of any kind, really. even tiny little ants. i get that creepy crawly feeling all over. i mean, does it interfere with your normal function? maybe you should see someone if it does. like, if you can't sit in a room without worrying about spiders coming along to...do what to you, i don't know.

you remind me of my cousin. if she sees one little tiny spider crawling on the ground, she will get so freaked out! you need to get used to them! try to think that spiders are very harmless and will not hurt you very much! just like my friend was afraid of my dog and my dog is a cute harmless sheltie! she never hurts anybody. All my friend had to do is pet her and get used to her. that is all you need to do: get used to them. Now i told my cousin that and she is trying to get used to them. now she is just afraid of the big spiders!

You need to be desensitized. Call a psychologist and make an appointment. They can help you.
