Neera S gave a very good answer. Using a make up sponge helps you apply it more evenly and smoothly. You don't have to apply much as the sponge helps a little go a long way. Blending is very important. Don't forget to blend your neck area as well so you don't end up with a line along your jaws and chin. I usually dab on three or four dots and blend them together and then dab a few more to the next area until I have blended into all areas of my face and neck. I do it this way so the dots don't start drying before I am able to blend them. If the foundation starts drying, it makes streaks and blotches that show up after you apply your powder. It may be helpful to go to some of the web sites like Maybelliine, Cover Girl or Revlon. They may have some techniques and pictures you can look at. Also take some time and practice putting it on when your not rushed. You get a feel for it and before long you'll have a technique or method that is comfortable for you. Also experiment with different brands to find which one feels comfortable on your skin.

Clean your face, use a facial toner followed by a moisturizer with sunscreen. It is essential that you use a makeup sponge and not your fingers to apply foundation! The best sponges are pie shaped. Lightly dampen the sponge with water and place it on top of your foundation bottle. Turn it upside down quickly and then rightside up. This will give you a small amount on your sponge, but should be enough for your entire face. Next, starting at the forehead and working down to the chin, put "polka-dots" all over your face. Still using the sponge, gently blend the dots to cover your face. Be sure and blend enough and into the hairline so you don't have a visible line. You should follow with a loose powder and brush to "set" the foundation.

before you buy, make sure it matches the lighter skin on your hand wrist area. Make sure skin is washed and toned, cleaned and moisturized. with an applicator sponge, apply concealer onto any blemishes/dark spots, or under eye area. then, run sponge briefly under water and squeeze out any excess, it is easier to apply base foundation with a damp sponge-more even coverage. apply the foundation to sponge lightly, not too much is needed and dot the main parts of your face( nose, forehead, both cheeks, and chin) may take a dot each for all parts of face. if you used concealer, do not try to blend, it will defeat the purpose, so just apply foundation over those spots with upward circle motions to blend more evenly on entire face. ensure that you chin and neck, and hair line have been blended and don't show any lines of application. Then apply a good powder finish, paying more powder to oily areas, and apply an extra layer under eyes before you apply any eye shadow to prevent the dark colors of shade from falling under the eye and into the fine lines and wrinkles making you appear old or tired. Viola'!! you're done.

For liquid foundation, dap a few dots on your forehead, chin, cheeks, and nose. Spread on the direction of your facial hair growth so that it stays close to your skin and looks natural. You can choose to use your fingers, foundation brush, or sponge. Make sure you blend well around the sides off your nose n mouth. Remember to spread until the hairline so that it does not look like your wearing a mask. Spread some on your eyelids too so that your eyeshadow stays longer. Hope this helps!

When you apply foundation make sure NOT to get the line!!! That so sucks when someone notices it!!!!!!! I apply mine with a Q tip and lotion or face cream. Some foundations are dry so adding a face cream makes it blend more evenly!! Then you can also use a loose powder as a finisher.

Find a shade that matches!! Instead of trial and error with buying, visit a beauty counter, or find a MaryKay consultant-- someone who will match a shade for you-- before you buy.

Wash and exfoliate before applying. Your foundation will last longer (doesn't fall off with dead skin throughout the day).

For application, a stippling motion (pouncing) with a damp sponge is your best bet-- mimics the texture of the skin.

Set with a dusting of loose powder.

start by using a small brush to cover the bad imperfections (like zits or dark circles)

then use a big brush and do the whole face.

then after that put on your blush (in the right place)

then do the rest of your makeup.

[foundation should always be put on first before other makeup]
