The true actual scientifically proven answer is 17.25. You may find that surprising, but it's true. The reason is that a significant number of people of low IQ continue believing until well into adulthood; and some never stop believing. This throws the average way off what you'd expect.
This is from a study done by scientists at MIT in 1977. Some speculate that the average age may have risen by between .75 and 1.25 years since George W. Bush was first elected, but I wouldn't take that too literally.

My daughter is 11 and this is her first year not really believing. Although my nephew was 13 when my sister told him there wasn't a Santa Clause. LOL so I guess there really isn't an average age.

I quit believing in Santa when I was three, and recognized the handwriting on the gifts as my dad's handwriting. My brother believed until he was about 10, but i had to shatter his dreams like the good little sister that i am.

I Never believed in Santa...my mom was so religious that she said that she didn't want me to grow up believing lies. unfortunately she forgot to mention that Christianity is about as real as Santa.
