I hate when the word is misused a lot. Kevin M is right and Johnny Rocket are right, it's known as emotional rock. I also hate it when people misuse punk and gothic.

emo is a form of music (origionally emocore) created by rites of spring and fugazi in the Whasington D.C. hardcore scene. They slowed down the music and made it more heartfelt so people coined the team emotional hardcore or emo as we know i today. I would rather someone call me and emo kid rather than "an emo," but there is nothing i can do to stop mtv from filling kids, who shop at hollister and buy one band t-shirt and think they are emo, with the false history of music, and underground music. In conclusion, no i don't like the fact that people call me and my frineds "****** emos who sit at home and cut themselfs." At least our lyrics mean something and its not pety teenage bullshit.

I guess I'll be the one to point people in the right direction. Emo is a form of hardcore music. It originally stood for "emotional hardcore" (as opposed to tough-guy hardcore) and was used to describe bands of the 1980's like Rites of Spring and Moss Icon. Later, the term started being used for indie-emo bands like Fugazi, then somehow the term started to be used to describe any music seen as "emotional". In the 2000's, the term "emo" has been used to describe anybody who acts sad, dresses in black, or identifies with punk rock or gothic music scenes.
It's a stupid word that is incorrectly and over-used and I hate it.
Thank you.

Uh... I am sorry you hate that word so much...
From what I gather, emo stands for emotional - so its not a bad thing right? its not bad to have emotions...
Uh, when it is tagged to something I can imagine you dont like it - and I am sorry - but its one of those stupid words... I tried asking the Yahoo! Answers "what does emo mean?" and I got various answers...
I am sorry that people see you as being "emo" - that is their problem... try to not let it bother you...

I hate the word as much as I hate those emo queers, you know, emo queers like you. You're bitching like a whining little emo queer. Not helping your cause.
Hail Satan!
