I observed that infant’s clothes sold in babies-r-us and other similar outlets in US are not much durable because once you buy a pair for a months baby it would not fit her in the next month because of the fast growth of the infant. The dress would last for the period it is actually required, thereby, controlling the prices of these items.

Similarly, for adults also the durability should be maintained according to the frequency of changes in trends and fashion. We may save a lot of money spent on increasing durability of clothes beyond requirements without compromising with their quality requirements.

Good thought really, isn't it oversimplistic?

Clothes for adults need to be durable because sometimes you can't just follow fashion trends, they might not suit your personality. I would be more comfortable to know I have some numbers in my wardrobe that I can trust to avoid last-minute disasters, rather than rushing to the shops every season to get the season's must.

Also, often the fashion trends repeat at least twice in one's lifetime and so you can cherish your favourite ties or suits for another time.

Fashions change dude, but I have experienced quality is paramount for the buyers (at the retailers) to buy, & even for the end customer.
There are two types of clothes "fashions" & "basics", the latter includes the garment items you mentioned. Would you buy a pant which would give way on the crotch seam while you are wearing it to office just because it has been washed thrice?
Also remember that most customers do not discard clothes simply because it's been worn a few times. Durability cannot be programmed into a textile product, it's a function of the type of fabric, the seaming & so on. And the cost depends on the material, the trims used, which part of the world it was made in, & the pricing structure of the retailer - not just durability.
BTW, children's clothing imports into US are the most strictly regulated in terms of quality & safety & have to pass thru lab tests before the buyer accepts them. What you saw is probably softer, sheerer fabrics for babies' comfort - not neccessarily cheap fabrics programmed to disintegrate by the time the kid grows out of it.

I know that my husband did wear madras shorts; I have photographic evidence. I can remember wearing madras shorts and sundresses when I was young; maybe 9 or 10 years old. I didn't wear weejuns in high school or college; but I do now. My mom liked madras; but she insisted on ironing those shorts; which I always thought was silly. My husband and I both come from blue collar backgrounds; but I think 'prep' was popular enough that we all wore it at times. My husband and I each have one pair of madras shorts and we do wear them. I bought the shorts a couple of years ago; I thought I was being silly, but those shorts look good and are comfortable. I have a pair of Weejuns that I wear fairly often. Weejuns are great shoes for when I am flying commercial, they are comfortable to walk in and slip on and off easily when I go through TSA checkpoints.
