Friends and Family should understand your position. Remember, Christmas isn't about the presents. I'm sure the people you care about will understand and be thankful to simply have you near.

If you have time, try making something that doesn't cost you money. Try a gift certificate for a hug, help with cleaning, etc. It's the thought that counts. :)

u thank them for the gift and let them know u appreciate it and hope that things will b better next year.
u r friends and family will understand anyway and if they don't then they really r not ur friends.
there r 2 things u might b able to do., if u think u have a little money to spare.
1 u could bake some cookies, they have premade packages that u only have to pop in the oven, wrap in foil or saranwrap and tie with ribbon.
2 there is always the dollar store, u can find some very interesting items for only a dollar
good luck and a very merry xmas to u.

Kindly say "Thank You" and give out cards. Or home-made goodies, like cookies or fudge. Find a simple recipe for something that makes a lot, then put it on a holiday paper plate, cover it with saran wrap, and put a ribbon or bow on it.

Another idea for next year, well before the season, suggest that you draw names for presents. That's what our family started doing when everyone started growing up and having kids, it was just getting too hard to buy for everyone. The adults and older kids all draw names, and then we all still buy for the younger children.

You say thank you... the best thing to do when out of money is either make a home-made card(if it's your mom or something) or give them something you already had. Good luck and have a very merry Christmas!!

This reminds me of a passage of scripture from Luke, which I think applys to you. Your friends and family may already know that you can not repay them with gifts and so they are simply following this teaching.
Lu 14:12 Then He also said to him who invited Him, "When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid.
Lu 14:13 "But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.
Lu 14:14 "And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just."

So what can you do? Just trust that God will repay them for what they have given you.

As a single parent who is off work on disability, I know exactly what you are feeling. Although I have asked family not to buy for me, some still insist on doing so. I have learned that to give is rewarding and the people who give to you do so because they love you and it gives them pleasure. Simply say thank you and show your delight in what they've given you. It's all they expect. I'm sure if they know you, they also know your financial situation.

First, ask if they come with gift receipts.
Second, return them for cash.
Third, pay your bills.

If you are truly hard on cash, your friends and family will understand. Extra distraction around the home isn't the best thing for someone who is trying to get out of the home and make a living.

Grab a gift box and find out what it was that they wanted or what you wanted to get them , get a picture of it and stick it to the box, then you write iou this for either next year or New Years Eve or for your birthday.
Good Luck and Best Christmas Wishes............remember its not all about the presents!

Money was tight this year, so I made cookies and bread for my friend and family. It was very enxpensive, yet everyone loved it because it was from the heart. Or you could get some nice jars and fill it with like pancake mix and a recipe card. Check out this out website for more ideas.

Christmas does not have to be about money. It's about exchanging gifts with the one's close to you in life. A gift can be hug, a favor, smile, appreciation, your time. making a card with a piece of paper and a crayola.
