I just "thumbs downed" about 40 answers I read that were:

racist
unhelpful
off topic

and the big one: WRONG.

I like the question "in which county is Kiev."

There were more incorrect answers than correct answers. Naturally, I went through and thumbs downed the incorrect ones in hopes of making them disappear.

If there are thumbs down, be a bit more skeptical of the information, and check the person's resources.

I may be inclined to agree toward Viper or Sandy more or
less.Because I have also seen "good" answers go unreconised
as such myself. Some people may be doing what I have just
recently read here called"Trolling" or called trolls.."Answers?"
Well what about some questions? Many questions can also be to broad and may be differently percieved by another.
Some say there's no such thing as a "stoopid" question
or "The only stoopid question is the one un asked"
(But is'nt there) Some questions limit your answering within the question. It is also difficult to answer a question that leaves no room for answering ,take for instance "Did anyone watch the Bears game?Arent they the greatest team that ever was?"(example)
Does a question such as the former leave room for answers, a debate?Or maybe an argument or complaint on you..Who knows?
How can you answer this question when it has already obviously been decided by the asker? A more appropriate question
would be "Is anyone here a big Bears fan and if not why?"
I personally dislike "trick" or forward questioning such as
this, the example is only "minor" But there are some ...There
are subjects with multiple answers and viewpoints .there
are facts or theories or hypothesis. You would hate to actually
believe someone might give a high star rating to what "really"
another is least qualified or "knows"to answer and that they actually might "use" it in their life, instead of seeking a professional medical opinion or otherwise. Some people are simply asking to be agreed with, somewhat like bullies,.Most subjects that are not defined by fact are usually open and debatable. Some people like to be funny ,rude ,whatever else
thats the "real" world it's no different to not expect it here.
Others want a quick fix to their homework assignment and
are to lazy to simply look it up themselves and write something ledgible to read.Yet there are others who are so short sighted
they take every thing they read on the internet literly. If that
were completely the case or if the internet were perfect I could
recieve a free college education. It's out there to an extent sure.
But you have to know where to look, and more importantly
"how to think about what information is given yourself
.No cure or idea or invention or what have you had been discovered by the person that hears someone else tell them. This is what it this is This is what we got and thats it.To also answer a question well you must consider first " What is their objective in asking any one this?" Some people just like to "stir up the pot"
Out of boredism There's nothing wrong with it I suppose. So others simply like to stir it back.A good question is someone
that asks a "Why" question .What other question is there.

Good responses so far.

There are many, sometimes countless perspectives on most issues. When someone has an "opinion" that usually means that they have a perspective they feel is superior to the others. This may be because it more accurately reflects "reality" ( usually most perspectives reflect somebody's reality ) or it may be simply because it is their own. Ownership (MY/MINE are better than your/yours) is the most common cause for overvaluing an idea.

When someone else's opinion (another idea, which, if we have actually thought for a while might have just as easily occurred to us ) presents itself, as frequently happens on YA, its very existence threatens the validity of OUR OPINION. BY having more than one point of view equally presented, we can no longer pretend to automatically be right just because I think so. This affront can only be met with rejection and dissapproval. (remember - it's all about ME & MINE)

This phenomena is most prevelant in 3 topics : Politics, Religion & Sexuality. If you visit many other areas, the thumbs down are not used much. People are more supportive of each other, or else there is just less opinion and more simple sharing of information in Medicine, Mathematics or Geography. Roam around & you will see for yourself.

There are many good & informative answers here; I have picked up many interesting new factoids (magma is 60 % feldspar) since the first day I called Wikijo into existence and stepped into the fray to help young folks with their science homework questions. While ranging far a field since then (skip the plane - take the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai ; you won't regret it! ) I have repeatedly encountered many fine responses in all subject areas (to remove chewing gum stuck to jeans, place in freezer and then chip the frozen gum off with a butter knife) and have been very impressed at the depth of knowledge held by many of the reponders, particularly professionals answering in their field.

:-)

Everyone has their own opinions. Sometimes they just disagree. Other times if someone has a good answer, but someone else already put it down they might give them a thumbs down out of anger. Other times the people who answer might relpy with something mean or a lot of times sarcastic, and those really do deserve thumbs down. I am sure that if your answer or a helpful informative answer recieves a thumb down that they definitely do not deserve it. I hope this helped! :-)

Some people think they gave good answers but really didnt bother to read the question. I recently asked a question and asked that only people who had had the same problem and fixed it answer. And I still got people who didn't bother to read my question and just gave my hypothetical answers or complete guesses. It is rather annoying to the question asker to just get nonsense answers.

It's all just a matter of opinion. Some people simply disagree with the answer, others just don't find it helpful.

Because they disagree. You can have the best answer possible and many people will disagree.

It's just their opinion. That's what makes this fun and helpful.
