I was thinking about purchasing a notebook computer to help me organize at work. I need something very lightweight. I plan to use Windows XP office type software for business planning and word processing and customer information storage. Wireless internet capability would be a plus as well but not necessary. I honestly do not know a whole lot about computers, I need some techie advice.

In the slim and light category, Consumer Reports has the top rated Apple MacBook weighing in at 5.2 lbs. The least expensive model ($1099) uses a 1.83GHz Intel processor which will run both Apple's Tiger Operating system (almost virus free) and Windows XP (virus prone and purchased separately for less than $150 because Vista is coming out soon) through Boot Camp (installed) or Parallels ($80 but allows simultaneous Windows and Tiger). If you decide on Parallels you should get at least 1GB (Add $75 for the 1.83GHz model) of RAM so it doesn't slow down. Apple sells Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac for $150 (student teacher edition, good for 3 computers) and $400 for the standard edition. There is a $100 rebate until mid-January for Office 2004. The hard drive storage is 60GB and wireless is built-in. It also has a built-in camera and a CD burner and DVD player. They also usually give $100 off a printer when you buy a laptop. Go to an Apple Store sometime. They have free seminars and a genius bar to help with any issues for free. It's awesome!

If you don't feel comfortable going the Apple route, The Sony Vaio VGN-SZ240 comes highly recommended. Since that review the SZ340 has come out, weighs 4.1 lbs, has XP Pro installed and starts at $1280. Their TX series is lighter but will probably run you $2000-$3000.

The last Consumer Reports recommendations were published in November 2006, so newer models are always coming out. In fact, Apple is rumored to have a 12 inch MacBook Pro thin to be released in less than 2 months. If it happens, I'll be buying one myself.

As a new user you just don't want to spend much on your first computer. Get a 500 dollar dell or gateway. After you have some experience you will know more about how to configure it the way you need. Don't let anyone hype you about dual cores, gigabytes, gigahertz, yada yada yada. Just make sure you have a recent Windows OS like Windows XP Sp2 or Vista, and a good security suite like Bit Defender or Windows Defender.

Buy a Dell computer with this system :
CPU : 2,0 Core 2 Duo with 4 MB cache
Ram : 1 or 2 GB
Graphic Card : 7600 GTX or GS 256 MB
H.D.D : 250 GB 7200 RPM
DVD-RW and a DVD-Rom
with anything else you need ...
this would be a good PC for games.

Sony's, Fujitsu's, and Lenovo's are famous for lightweightedness but are also some of the most expensive. Likewise, the Mac iBook is quite light but also a bit expensive. The pricing is geared toward business users that most often have their companies paying for the laptops. ;)

HP is the lightest you can get. It has a long battery life and you can get one with a built in wireless card. Dells are durable but very heavy. Whatever you do, do not get a Compaq. Pentium Processors are good, but Celeron Processors are extremely slow. Good luck!
