Now, I know it depends on alot of factors such as what all is on the propane (in our case, water heater, and heat for house) and how insulated, size of house, and so forth, but we are moving to a house that has propane and that will be our first time ever using propane... Any ideas? If you use propane, how big is your house, what is all on your propane, and about hom much do you spend monthly on it? We are not doing a budget program at this time, but we are going to see how it goes then decide.. thanks

I live in a three bedroom house in the country, about 2200 sq ft, and we heat it with propane. Heaters, stove, hotwater heater, there are three of us living here. It costs us about $200.00 every 3-4 months for propane.

As you say it depends on your situatiopn with the house.
These days in most areas it's cheaper tohav eelectric, butin cold weather areas electric can go fast. If i wa sout west, up north, or back east I would have at least one or two heaters that worked on gas without electric for stand by.
Here propane is 3 bucks a gallon and my mother law used the same company for 40 years. We live in her old house and they now refuse to deliver without cash only . In fact the driver told me they were not taking on any new customers, and he could see gas ging to 5 bucks in 3 to 4 yrs.
Gas is a scam and getting worse.
I used last city gas in mississippi and it cost me about 30 a month just for gas water and cooking. That was some time ago.
I think you can control how much you use better with propane, but be sure ot keep it refilled at half full if you ar ein a bad snow and ice area as it's hard to get in bad weather.
Unless you get it well under 3 bucks a gallow I think eventually yo wil go to electric. Price wise propane should be cheaper as meter readers usually just estimate your bill.

You wont notice a big difference in using propane. The only thing different will be delivery, having it come from a tank rather than a pipeline. As far as cost they are roughly the same, but propane has a slightly lower Btu value.

It depends on the cost difference per BTU of energy. You can just compare propane to natural gas, and you don't need to know how good the house is to know the % difference.
Change the $ figures in the following equation to match what your local prices are

Natural Gas: (1,000,000 btu)/(103,000 btu/therm) = 9.7 therms x $$$/therm = $$$$ / .9 (efficiency = 90%) = $$$$ for one million btu of heat.

Propane: (1,000,000 btu)/86,000 btu/gallon) = 11.63 gallons x $$/gallon = $$$$ / .9 (efficiency = 90%) = $$$$ for one million btu of heat.

What you need to see if the difference between the cost of BTU's using propane or using natural gas.

Is this a new house? If not, the previous owners had gas bills, and they better let you see 'em!
