Because it happened. It has a place.

It doesn't.

The human race, trying to cope with their problems, will resort to placing the blame for an event on something other than themselves, a.k.a. FATE. In this was they can console themselves and recover from the event faster. However, this does not fully explain the nature of the action and is inconclusive because, if you are an atheist, who is to say DETERMINES the reason? Some ultimate power that you don't believe exists? Not logical.

It may be noted, however, that everything that happens changes you. You can interpret this in either a positive or negative way based on your outlook on life, which may in fact be affected by events that may or may not "happen for a reason." Each event leads to another, ex. "If you did not get fired from your job, you would have never found your other job that you like so much better", or "If you wouldn't have gone into that coffee shop where someone stole all your money, you would have never met your future spouse," etc.

So things may not happen for a particular reason, but they can be interpreted as a way of improving your life. Or . . not. It really depends on how optimistic you are. :)

when things happen to us, as our life happens to us something don't set right or they feel too good and we question them when we get little to no answers to those questions and can not make out what our life may or may not be saying to us we start to look for things later on that would explain why such and such happened so we end up saying well since this happened it must have been preparing me for that to happen. Life is not laid out like that. It just happens as we careen into each other like billiards ball and learn to either live with the reality of that or go bonkers and stare at little men marching out of the cracks in our cell somewhere ut of more harms ways shitt happens so just learn to go with the flow because you have no paddle big enough to change the course of it anyway smile it makes people Wonder what you have been up to

To make life interesting. Actually I don't know, and once my philosophy teacher said that nothing happens by accident, if you had an accident you were in the right place at the right time. God doesn't make accidents. Now, if I believed there was some supernatural man up there, I would say God did it, but since I don't. I say it is just to make life interesting.
