The worst part is that you wasted all this time on thought and typing this question. Islam advocates killing no one and forbids it if it is not done in justice (death penalty for a murderer or in self defense against an armed man). It also encourages and even commands that people research and learn and study, there is absolutely nothing wrong with questioning anything. If you spent as much time reading about and reflecting on what Islam REALLY teaches, well it just might be more of a benefit for yourself. After all, sharing in hatred doesn't make one feel better or rest easier.
Plus I'd like to see your source for your statistics if you don't mind.
Fergita: I think Irshad has alot to offer and if more people would look past her orientation to see her message, well they could certainly benefit from that! No one's perfect save the Creator and it's better to have a lesbian who understands what the Quran is telling her than to have a man who memorizes Quran for popularity contests.

A book called The Trouble with Islam Today by Irshak Manji has loads of interesting insights into this religion. It was written by a woman who practices the religion but maintains critical thinking skills while examing the overall condition of the religion today. Check out her web site.

Islam per se DOES NOT advocate killing of those who question its teachings.
Muslims are encouraged to discuss Islam and its teachings. As a non-Muslim, I entered into discussions and indeed questioned some of the teachings of the Quran with my Muslim colleagues.
The main problem is, as you've raised in your question, the issue of literacy. Illiterate muslims depend on Imams, marabouts and other Muslim clerics for their knowledge of Islam.
In many cases, the only imams available depend on their memory as they themselves are illiterate. (The majority of imams are literate, don't get me wrong here.) the illiterate imams are the ones who wreak the most damage. they instruct their students in their own INTERPRETATIONS of Islam.
If the interpretation is wonky, then the students will end up getting a wonky picture of what Islam is about. Then they grow up, and practise what they were taught. What they practise is not proper Islam, as they are not following proper Islamic teachings.

Thats because Islam is not true. It teaches the most vile and inhumane things in order to spread it through intimidation and fear.
>Quran Sura 5:38: Cut off the hands of thieves, whether they are male or female, as punishment for what they have done—a deterrent from God: God is almighty and wise.
>Quran Sura 5:51: O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends.....
>Quran Sura 5:33: "Those who make war with Allah and his messenger will be killed or crucified, or have their hands and feet on alternate sides cut off....
>Quran Sura 47:4: Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks
The reason why it's spreading so fast is solace in conformity, arranged marriage, polygamy (allowed to have 4 wives), encouragement to have plenty of children, shunning of apostates by Muslim families, strict indoctrination of Muslim children, dogmatism, comfort of the afterlife, and the persecution and >>capital punishment for apostasy in Islamic countries<<.

Religions were the ancient political parties . Islam was propagated by a rich merchant having international trade with a large number of men who were able to use their number to run over other countries and subjugate them by sword power. It was at a time when might was right . Now that things have changed all oer the world and might is no longer the right , most of those organisations which were dependent on might have come to nothing. What was established by violence will come to an end by its own violence . That is the order of nature ..

The question itself is presenting wrong information. Islam does not advocate the killing of those who question its teachings. Where did you get this from? Prophet Muhammad had thousands of people asking him questions he very patiently provided answers for then it is your choice; take it or leave it.
Then you jump to a completely different issue; yes, it is a challenge and it is against the teachings of Islam that urge to always learn, read, research and think but what are you talking about?
Peace

Back in the Philippines, 2 American missionaries (they were a couple, I forgot which denomination) were kidnapped by Muslims...those kidnappers demanded too much from the government before finally releasing the 2 after years of captivity. Sadly, the man was dead...I guess they are spreading their religion with their acts of PEACE?

50% of Muslims world-wide live within a democratic style government, and with the advantages and benefits that go along with this style of government.
That's all I got.
