because as sure as i purchased a $349. Apple Ipod for my sister in law as a christmas gift this morning, thousands of children will certainly die, dead as worthless doornails, in third world countries and probably here in the west to.

What is up with this? what sort of illusary life do i have to be living to carry on in this way? And why are we not in tears over this?

It's easily justified... quite simply our society is selfish, self centred and couldn't give a toss about anyone other than themselves. Even the giving has become a selfish act in some cases.. don't want others thinking ill of you in any way, better make it look like you're doing well and care etc. The whole things a load of bollocks if you ask me. Instead of giving a gift, I reckon we should ask each other for a dance. Share a dance with your sister in law, your granny, your neice etc.. Lots of giggles and two people share more togetherness & memories in dancing together than any gift. Think about it.. you remember it when you danced with someone no matter what the situation.

I agree with you. It is insane for sure. My wife mindlessly is spending as much money as possible on Christmas gifts. I feel like the guy on the commercial where the guy is on a ladder hanging Christmas lights while his wife keeps telling him how many more people she is going to buy for. Then the guy pushes the ladder and himself off the roof.

I don't understand the need to spend money like this. Only my wife does.

My kids are already to spoiled. My son has 5 remote control trucks, he will now have 6. My daughter has 20 dolls, she will now have 21. etc...

My wife has everything! But if you listen to her talk you would think shes never had anything.

I also have everything, and I don't need anything.

If there is any money left when shes done, I'm game for helping someone in need.

Well, think about it. It's not YOUR fault that there are thousands, millions of people living with next to nothing. Just because you bought a $349 iPod doesnt mean you are anyway responsible for any poverty. It's the governments of big countries who should feel guilty!

Why should you feel guilty for your life and how you live it? What goes on in other parts of the world is out of your control. But there are ways to donate to various organizations, if you feel that you need to help in some way. However, feeling bad for what you have is unnecessary...be thankful that you have the means to buy your sister-in-law that great ipod!

This is a great question and one I think about often. I do donate to charity and adopted an angel from our company's tree. I also donate to the local food bank. Most of us live like kings as compared to the majority of our fellow humans. You are correct that many of us could do much more.

Most assuredly I say to you that in today's world, people would rather just keep their eyes shut to everything going on around them. That way, they do not have to deal with the harsh reality of everything going on around them, or that they have hardened their hearts.

It is just easier to "let someone else deal with it" instead of us. And all the while we should all be weeping a torrential flood of tears. Nevertheless, we inch closer and closer to what we fear: the end of life and the grave.

Ask yourselves this question:

Did I care enough about other people in my life? Or did I waste it away on hording useless trinkets?

Just keeping it real.

The illusion is that human nature is to give where the need is greatest. True, we feel empathy for others' suffering, but we will not suffer ourselves to end theirs, even if it is something minor like buying an embarrasingly crappy gift.

well you are singing my song.
i actually donate to heifer international
instead of giving people gifts because
i had the same feeling as you.
so i just tell them "i gave you a goat"
it went to a starving family in kenya.
we really are not trapped. i really have
the choice to donate to chairites that i trust
(heifer international is one of the best)
and try to make sure children don't starve
my womens group does the same.
instead of exchanging gifts,we each pick out
a charity on our birthday and others can donate.
you could do it for your birthday.
other good charities include
world neighbors. and manos huntas.
you do not have to carry on the way you are.
you can do somethingmore consistent with your internal values.
and consider joining the peace corps.
