Many Chinese people believe that China lays claim to a bigger territory than is currently China. I am currently in China and according to many people here Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and parts of India are all supposed to be part of China. Tibet is one of these palces. I think at one time Tibet was part of China. Mao passed through Tibet on the Long March so maybe while he was there he decided he liked it. You also have to realize that from a military standpoint the higher ground is an advantage and Mao was a military leader.

They did not like the power and respect His Holiness The Dalai Lama held and wanted him out, the people of Tibet refused so , China invaded and took over. It was a massacre. (And yet another example of a country asking for US intervention and receiving none because they had no resources to exploit)
