If you don't see the bean seed (and like you were told in a previous answer, it is the mature dried bean) in your local garden center, there is probably a reason. They really like hot weather and lots of sun. The stereotype of UK weather doesn't fit that description, but I guess we could be fed a lot of bs about that and It probably varies some in different parts of the country. "Thompson&Morgan" is a seed catalog I get from an English company, and I notice that they don't offer butter beans or limas, but they offer fava beans which may grow better for you. If you can get seed, chose a variety resistant to powdery mildew and that has the shortest time to maturity that you can find. I wouldn't give them too much space the first year as it may be a wasted effort. I appreciate that you want to grow your own, I live in Virginia, USA, and can eat them fresh in the later part of the summer. I don't think eating gets much better. Next best though , are the frozen ones. I don't think much of the canned ones unless I do it myself. Too mushy and salty. If your garden space is limited, I think I would use it for something else. It takes a lot of space to grow enough beans to make a good pot. Best of luck whatever you decide. And happy holidays.

If you have dried beans available just get some of them and plant them. Plant about 1" deep in nicely tilled dirt. Temps should be no colder than upper 50's at night and warming to 70's- 80's in the day. Will take about 75-80 days to harvest. Needs lots of sunshine. If you have all that you can grow them. I've always thought a butter bean was just a big lima bean. m

Butter Beans originated in the Central and South American regions. I would think the temperatures in the UK would be too cool to grow them out doors. You could grow them in a greenhouse.
I've never been to the UK though. It may grow there.
You can buy some older(better) varieties here:

You grow butter beans by planting butter beans themselves, they are the seeds. And yes they are grown here.
I am not a gardener so that's all I can advise, sorry!

I just open a tin of them. It says on the tin that they were produced in the UK. Be careful, butter beans in a tin contain suphites.
